Daniel Burke’s Biography

Daniel Burke is CNN's Religion Editor, where he writes in-depth news and analysis pieces while editing the award-winning religion section, CNN Belief.

CNN Belief has been named Best Online Religion Section by the Religion News Association every year since 2014.

Most recently, Burke delivered a TEDx talk on "Our Next Religious Revolution."

He has written about Pope Francis' period of exile in Argentina, America's long history of Islamophobia and a Bible Belt family's conversion to atheism. He has also written about the moral questions that arose after he narrowly avoided a train crash, explored why religion is so divisive and investigated the mysterious provenance of the Bible Museum's Dead Sea Scroll fragments.

Before coming to CNN, Burke was a reporter and editor at Religion News Service.

Burke has been honored multiple times by the American Academy of Religion for best in-depth reporting on religion. He won the academy's top prize in 2018.

He's been a finalist for the Religion News Association's top awards every year since 2010. Burke's writing has also been honored by the National Headliner Awards and the Society for Features Journalism.

Burke graduated from a dual-degree program at Columbia University, earning an MS in journalism and MA in comparative religion. Before that, he attended Georgetown University, where a course on "The Problem of God" set him on the path to religion reporting.
