Low mass contact binaries: Orbital stability at extreme low mass ratios.
With the ever-increasing number of light curve solutions of contact binary systems, an increasing number of potential bright red nova progenitors are being reported. There remains, however, only one confirmed event.
Effects of metallicity on the instability mass ratio of low-mass contact binary systems
Contact binary systems are common among close binaries with estimates suggesting that 1 in 500 stars in the galaxy disc are contact binaries (Rucinski 2006). Their potential merger has gained significant interest since the recognition that transients such as luminous red novae are the result of the merger of components in contact binary systems (Tylenda et al. 2011).
[2007.05249] Phase-locked polarization by photospheric reflection in the semidetached eclipsing binary $μ^1$ Sco
[Submitted on 10 Jul 2020] Authors:Daniel V. Cotton, Jeremy Bailey, Lucyna Kedziora-Chudczer, Ain De Horta Download PDF Abstract: We report the detection of phase-locked polarization in the bright ($m_V$=2.98-3.24) semidetached eclipsing binary $\mu^1$ Sco (HD 151890). The phenomenon was observed in multiple photometric bands using two different HIPPI-class (HIgh Precision Polarimetric Instrument)polarimeters with telescopes ranging in size from 35-cm to 3.9-m.
