Resolved: The US Contribution to WWI was critical, even though late
September 25, 2026, 2:02am 1 This thread Resolved: Germany was the aggressor against France in WWI was highly educational for me, in spite of it eventually being closed, so I’m inspired to start my own.
Resolved: Germany was the aggressor against France in WWI
September 11, 2026, 8:57pm 1 Germany, France and Great Britain were signatories to a treaty guaranteeing Belgian neutrality. German war planners relied on a plan of invading both Belgium and France in the event of a war against France and Russia. They scrapped alternate plans. As a result in any crisis where there was a risk of war between the powers, Germany left themselves with no option to limit escalation and could only opt for a maximum engagement that violated their treaties.
I pit posters who know and like bands that I don't know and like!
July 9, 2026, 6:28pm 1 Author’s note: The following rant is satire-like,…and not meant to be taken entirely seriously. While I do hold the actual view and opinions of this rant (so I would not call it trolling), I have attempted to put it in a lighthearted, humorous, and slightly over exaggerated way. It is not meant to be taken 100% seriously is my point. There is a little bit of satire mixed in…a sort of “stop liking things I dislike!!” aspect of it.
Yet Another Fun But Probably Meaningless Online "Political Compass" Test You Can Take
June 30, 2026, 4:12pm 1 Here. It’s interesting in that it’s “vibes-based”, and a lot of the questions are about general attitudes toward life rather than specific political issues. It says that the politician whose views most closely resemble mine is Zohran Mamdami, which is certainly reasonable. Give it a whirl and see what you think.
DNC releases 2024 election autopsy (hijacks tolerated)
May 21, 2026, 4:21pm 1 Hijacks tolerated CNN – 21 May 26 Ever since the 2024 election, Democrats have been searching for answers as to what went so wrong to possibly have re-installed Donald Trump as president. DNC has released their autopsy report on the 2024 election. It’s apparently a draft, isn’t well sourced or edited and contains some factual inaccuracies.
"Something went wrong, try again later"
May 20, 2026, 10:09am 1 This is a rant about the trend in user interface design to make error messages vague to the point of being unusable. I decided last week that I felt like going to Sonic to eat. If your immediate reaction to that is “well there’s your problem”, fuck you, you snob ass motherfucker, it’s just a concrete example. People are allowed to eat cheap burgers.
Neville Chamberlain: Misunderstood Hero
April 13, 2026, 6:13pm 1 Everything you probably think you know about Chamberlain – that he was a gullible fool who was easily manipulated by Hitler – is absolutely wrong. This post is based on the work of Dr. Gerhard Weinberg, an award-winning historian at the University of North Carolina and author of The Foreign Policy of Hitler’s Germany and a 1000-page popular history of the war, The World at Arms.
The way to address housing affordability is to build more housing
November 12, 2025, 5:43pm 1 Wanted to continue the discussion of increasing housing supply from Is Trump’s mortgage plan a bad idea? The right solution to the housing squeeze is… wait for it… to build more housing. A sound lending policy might be government-backed zero-interest loans for construction of qualified residential housing. You get favorable terms for building, not for buying. We can’t borrow our way out of the housing squeeze, we can only build our way out of it. Not so fast.
What's a Filibuster, or Can the Senate really just "change the rules"
November 6, 2025, 3:33pm 1 Seeing a lot of talk about how a simple majority in the Senate can just “change the rules” to get rid of the 60 vote requirement to end a filibuster. Is it really that easy? Yes and No. What does the Senate do? Basically….Only the Senate: Ratify Treaties, Confirm Presidential Appointments, Impeachment. Shared with House: Passing laws, Oversight.
I don't need antiperspirant to last 72 hours (rant too mild for pit)
11 Disclosure: I worked in the personal-care products industry at my first job, and specifically worked on deodorants for four years. I’m pretty sure these are combination products containing both anti-perspirant and deodorant (and fragrance) All anti-perspirants are also deodorants – even if they are labeled as “unscented,” they will likely still have some sort of masking fragrance to cover the chemical scents of the base product. However, not all deodorants are also anti-perspirants.
What's wrong about a lethal military?
October 2, 2025, 2:20am 1 The United States military should be the most dominant force on Earth and should kill and deter the enemy. Hegseth is an idiot, but he has some points. Why is this an issue? Lethality is the main goal of the military.
How I decided to vote for California Prop. 50 in November
September 30, 2025, 4:05pm 1 Prop. 50 is designed to re-district California to (try to) add 5 Democratic seats to the House of Representatives in 2026, to offset the 5 seats that the Republicans are getting from re-districting in Texas. The idea is that, without either of these changes, the Democrats stand a good chance of re-taking the House due to dissatisfaction with Trump.
Why we have Trump
June 27, 2025, 1:15pm 1 Trump won, and everyone knows why. It was because liberals put up with too much, or not enough. It was because Kamala Harris ran, or didn’t run early enough. It is because Biden dropped out, or didn’t drop out when he should have. It was because progressives took over the party, or because Democrats abandoned progressives.
Not following the 'reciprocal tariff' philosophy
April 3, 2025, 1:47pm 1 I know there is an extensive tariff thread ongoing, but I don’t think I’ve seen a reasoning for why it is ‘ok’ for other countries to tariff US goods, but not ok for US to impose tariffs. First, I recognize that the ‘reciprocal’ part might be a falsehood, as I can’t really trust anything Trump says. (are there REALLY tariffs of the sort he says on US goods?) But what seems to be ‘attractive’ is basically revenge tit-for-tat.
Why won't Biden do his duty (as perceived by the OP)?
November 15, 2024, 7:14pm 1 In US history there have been several instances of Presidents making Supreme Court nominations in order to balance the size of the Court with the number of federal Courts of Appeals (aka Circuit Courts). Today the number is out of balance. There are nine Justices, but thirteen Courts.

President Vance?
November 6, 2024, 6:18pm 1 I don’t want to be a Conspiracy Theorist, but…* The Right (the ones who have any power) don’t like Trump. It’s obvious to everyone except Trump voters that Trump is mentally impaired. What if Conservatives declare Trump is unfit to be President (25th Amendment) and replace him with Vance? Vance is just as evil, but not as narcissistic or stupid. What would happen? Apologies if this has been asked elsewhere. *‘Any declarative statement before “but” is bullshit.’
Where did the 16 million Democratic votes go?
November 6, 2024, 2:01pm 1 I’ve been texting friends on the left and the right as we all have. My right wingers are asking how the Dems had 81 million votes for Biden in 2020, but only 65 million (so far) in 2024. I don’t believe for one second that there was voter fraud in 2020. But a 20% drop in an election for one party seems to be significant. Especially this year. And a couple of these guys have pointed to this a proof that there was voter fraud in 2020.
Harris and SCOTUS
2 What metric do you use to conclude that Brown Jackson supports civil rights in a way that Kagan or Sotomayor do not? I do not follow the Court as closely as I used to, but in major civil rights cases they seem to vote together. Why would you assume that Harris would appoint justices that are unlike Kagan, Sotomayor or Brown Jackson? Just because a portion of a career has been as a prosecutor? She also served as CA attorney general, senator and vice president.
Olympic Boxing Gender Controversy
August 1, 2024, 10:13pm 1 This person achieves something amazing and of course the usual jerks pile on. I wonder about the behavior of her opponent as well. NBC News – 1 Aug 24 Trump, Elon Musk, J.K. Rowling, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni all appeared to criticize the inclusion of boxer Imane Khelif of Algeria.
If Biden drops out of the race now, he will have to resign the presidency as well
June 28, 2024, 2:35pm 1 Everyone talking about Biden dropping out of the race because he cannot handle the campaign (as evidenced by a perceived disastrous debate performance) have to face the uncomfortable fact that the presidency is much more difficult than the campaign. I don’t see how he can credibly hold onto the office if he quits now. It seems like an all or nothing proposition to me.
According to Justice Roberts, nearly everyone besides him misunderstands the "tradition and history" precedent
The SCOTUS just overturned a lower court ruling saying that a federal law unconstitutionally barred a domestic abuser under a restraining order from possessing a gun. If you’re wondering how it was possible for the lower court to think something that crazy, it was because they were trying to interpret the Bruen precedent set by the SCOTUS a mere two years ago that gun control laws are only constitutional if they are within the “history and tradition” of gun control laws in the United States.
South Carolina Congressional District 1 Gerrymander Case
April 19, 2024, 1:24am 1 A thread to discuss Alexander v. South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP. SCOTUSblog Independent News and Analysis on the U.S. Supreme Court In 2018, Joe Cunningham was the first Democrat in 30 years to flip a district in South Carolina. Nancy Mace won back the seat for Republicans in 2020 by a razor thin margin of nearly 5,500 votes.
USA Intel Announcement on possible national security threat, see post 3

What is the Import of Mike Johnson's Win as Speaker of the House?
1 Not wishing to hijack this thread: Continuing the discussion from Hi folks - After consulting with the Mods the consensus is to retire the “McCarthy’s ouster” thread I started ten whole days ago. My, what an eternity in politics. Is it a coincidence that this is exactly one Scaramucci? I think not. That thread, along with McCarthy himself, is over. We can pick up here with Is it Scalise or Jordan or ??? But I have some thoughts.
The RESTRICT Act is a terrilble idea-what should be done to improve online security?
The Restricting the Emergence of Security Threats that Risk Information and Communications Technology Act was introduced a month ago. Based on what I’ve read here it seems overly broad and gives the Commerce Secretary too much power. Could it be used to ban TikTok? Discord? Aimed at certain companies by the whim of politicians? Whatever we should do to improve our national online security, this ain’t it (and it’s a bad look for the Biden administration that they didn’t push back on it harder IMHO).
Pitting nearwildheaven
1 (I also believe that Anita Hill lied about being sexually harassed by him, and set the cause back by many years by doing so. I saw the hearings, and her body language totally gave her away; I believe that she wanted to date him, and he wasn’t interested, so she was doing this to get back at him.) Well, it’s a good thing he didn’t get the job anyway and she didn’t suffer any humiliation from doing so! She sure showed him, didn’t she? Body language, huh?
