The Bristol fashion zine proving there's Star Potential beyond the M4
Of all the lessons a teacher can pass down to a student, taste is perhaps the most nebulous. "Something that is perhaps even more interesting and useful is teaching someone to identify what 'good taste' and subsequently 'bad taste' is to them," Dean Davies , a senior lecturer in fashion communication at Bristol UWE says. "They learn to operate within either one and challenge what 'good taste' and 'bad taste' is or could be.

At Hedi Slimane’s Latest Celine Show, True Couture Work Reigns Supreme
Celine Autumn/Winter 2020Courtesy of Celine Celine by Hedi Slimane Autumn/Winter 2020 – arguably the designer’s most unisex collection yet – possessed a sense of dangerous, early 70s cinematic frisson, writes Dean Mayo Davies February 29, 2020 “It’s impressive, no?” Those were our driver’s words on arrival at the Celine venue, Place Vauban, in front of the Les Invalides dome. Once more, Hedi Slimane’s black modernist box interplayed with the iconic architecture.
How Menswear Realised Its Ambition in the 2010s
Reaching the end of a decade is significant, like arriving at the top of a summit, taking a breath of fresh air and checking out the view. All the while being tentatively aware of the Jenny Holzer truism: “Looking back is the first sign of aging and decay.” Not wanting to look too hard, yet appreciate the journey. At the beginning of the 2010s, we had beautiful clothes, but in simpler contexts. Fashion was a catalogue to shop from.
A decade of i-D covers: Lady Gaga, 2011
This story originally appeared in i-D's The Exhibitionist Issue, no. 312, 2011. Mugler was the outrageous archetype for Paris-born, international glamour and WTF-ness throughout the 80s and 90s. Today, the house is reborn under the creative direction of superstylist Nicola Formichetti and designers Romain Kremer and Sébastien Peigné. Whilst Lady Gaga, seen here in the label’s menswear, moonlights as its musical director.

The Intoxicating Appeal of Older Sisters

How The Row Became Fashion’s Most Enviable Brand
The Row Autumn/Winter 2019Courtesy of The Row “Like Alaïa, The Row it stands in its own completeness,” writes Dean Mayo Davies of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s simple yet uncompromising brand September 09, 2019 78 per cent cashmere, 14 per cent silk, three per cent wool, two per cent camel hair (and three per cent other, out of necessity). Celine by Hedi Slimane Spring/Summer 2020Courtesy of Celine Dean Mayo Davies talks to David Kramer, whose nostalgic art met its match at Celine’s S/S20 show at Paris Men’s Fashion Week At Sunday night’s Celine show, the curtain fall of the Spring/Summer 2020 menswear season, Hedi Slimane showed flared trousers, paired with the type of cropped continental leathers synonymous with any legend that made a dangerous, iconic record in the 70s – or threatened to.
Exclusive: Paul Simonon Directs a Video for The Good, The Bad & The Queen
“When you’re filming, if you’ve got a very good performance then you really can’t go wrong as long as you’ve got the angles, everything lined up.” Paul Simonon, The Good, The Bad & The Queen’s bassist is throwing light on the band’s new video he’s directed, The Truce of Twilight. Premiered here, it has the manner of a silent film that isn’t… silent. Such an antithesis is befitting of a group riffing on what Britishness is in 2019. It’s (a bit) complicated, isn’t it?

Meet the young generation reshaping Belfast’s arts scene
Taken from the autumn/winter 2018 issue of Dazed. You can buy a copy of our latest issue here. In Belfast, with ravaging cuts to the arts and the recent closure of legendary clubs like the Stiff Kitten, the Student’s Union and God’s Waiting Room at The Maple Leaf, the young creative community has been inspired to take action.
Hedi Slimane
The work of Hedi Slimane needs no introduction – the ambience of his language and the “silhouette Slimane” developed at Yves Saint Laurent and Dior Homme continues to reverberate through the streets today. By the end of 2007, at which time Slimane stopped designing to focus solely on photography, he had accomplished the remarkable feat of turning a generation of adolescents on to style. It's not often that a change between disciplines is successful.
Hedi’s Celine was a dressed up riposte to streetwear’s stranglehold
Paris’s Place Vauban might be famous for the golden dome shining over Napoleon’s tomb, but, for Hedi Slimane at least, it’s likely to have a hidden meaning: Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé moved into an apartment at the address in 1961, filling their home with the beginnings of a haul that would mark them as the greatest art, furniture, and objet d’art collectors of the 20th century.
Isaiah Stone is Hollywood’s new misfit poster boy
Taken from autumn 2018 issue of Dazed. You can buy a copy of our latest issue here. Isaiah Stone has made just three movies so far, including this summer’s excellent Leave No Trace, a hit at Sundance 2018. Yet with each of his naturalistic performances, a compelling aura of ambiguity has grown around the 23-year-old actor – who exactly is he? What is his own reality? Because on-screen he gives more than dialogue, inhabiting his roles with what seem like flickers of himself.
Matty Bovan and his mum plot the future of fashion

In the new issue, designer Matty Bovan invited us into his family home in York, where he discussed beauty pageants and always doing the most with the least with his mum. He introduces the shoot concept here: This shoot is very personal and a celebration of where I’m from and where I’m going. My mum, Plum, and I are so close – she works on the jewellery in my shows with me.

Why Hedi Slimane at Céline could be fashion’s next great story
First thing on Sunday morning, a friend texted me. ‘Hedi’s gone to Céline’, followed by three of the spiky explosive emojis. She was excited. And knew I would be too. The scene of the announcement was the Céline Instagram account. The comments there were more passionate than anything regarding AW18 menswear, which was on its final day of shows. Hedi Slimane is a designer who everyone has an opinion about. But here’s mine.

Model Behaviour: Marte Mei van Haaster
Hailing from Holland, Marte Mei van Haaster is an international catwalk regular, appearing on runways for the likes of Versace, Miu Miu, Valentino, Miu Miu, Lanvin, Céline, Rick Owens, Stella McCartney, Nina Ricci, Sonia Rykiel, Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquière and Chanel. A couple of months after the latter's A/W12 show, Karl Lagerfeld has made a repeat booking, casting the model in this week's special croisière 2013 presentation at Versailles.
How Charles Jeffrey is bringing the club back to the catwalk
In terms of a line between Charles Jeffrey: LOVERBOY the collection, and Charles Jeffrey’s LOVERBOY club night at VF Dalston, there isn’t one. A visit to the CSM MA Menswear graduate’s studio earlier this week revealed his friends (and club attendees) lending a hand in every way they could. This label exists because of the foot-to-the-floor freedom they have when dressing up for a night’s dancing.
Charlotte Gainsbourg on the raw sincerity of her new music
Taken from the autumn/winter issue of Dazed. You can buy a copy of our latest issue here. Dazed will be publishing a series of articles with Charlotte Gainsbourg throughout the day – head here to read more. Charlotte Gainsbourg has a video message on her phone from Robert De Niro, telling her she is welcome at The Greenwich, the beautiful hotel he owns in New York City, any time she likes. It’s a Friday afternoon and we’re sitting at his favourite table in the hotel’s garden, where he often works.
Bill Skarsgård: scare tactics
Taken from the autumn issue of Dazed. You can buy a copy of our latest issue here. Bill Skarsga?rd is sitting on a couch in an east London studio, talking in full flow when, out of the corner of my eye, I catch someone walking past with a red balloon. Distraction ensues for a split-second – not that the actor notices.
Your First Look at Helmut Lang As Seen by Walter Pfeiffer
Under the direction of editor-in-residence Isabella Burley, Helmut Lang launches The Artist Series, a new project drawing on the brand’s enduring legacy of artistic collaboration. Over the course of the next 12 months, collaborators from Peter Hujar and Carrie Mae Weems to Martine Syms and Andrew Miksys will uncover and recontextualise three cult artworks from their archives as a series of limited-edition posters, T-shirts and products.
Lessons in being bold by Vivienne Westwood
“You don’t have to call me Dame, I’m Vivienne, Dame Vivienne Westwood told Dazed co-founder Jefferson Hack in Berlin last month. Along with other creative talents such as model and activist Adwoa Aboah and artist Fergus Purcell, they were gathered to launch Zalando’s music and fashion mash-up Bread & Butter (B&&B) which will take place from September 1st-3rd in Berlin. The theme this year is ‘BOLD’, and it doesn’t get any bolder than Westwood.
Alexander Wang on selling his adidas collab out of a truck
Taken from the winter 2016 issue of Dazed: If fashion was an American teen movie, then Alexander Wang (and his gang) would be the bad kids hanging around the fountain at the mall. The ones you were told to stay the hell away from – and who you’re desperate to be friends with because they know rappers and throw parties recreating Miami strip clubs.
I KNOW SIMPLY THAT THE SKY WILL LAST LONGER THAN I
As the 28th edition of the mythic Hyères festival kicks off this weekend, Dazed contributor Pierre Debusschere tells the story behind his grandest project to date, I KNOW SIMPLY THAT THE SKY WILL LAST LONGER THAN I and interviews model Andrew Westermann, one of the project's protagonists exclusively for us... "This project started after we were commissioned by the villa Noailles to create an exhibition during the 28th Hyères international fashion and photography festival.
Riccardo Tisci on basketball, freedom and design
“In Italy, America, England, everywhere in the world, you have all these basketball courtyards everywhere for free, where kids can go and start playing,” Tisci rhapsodises. “Anybody could play – it was easy, open to everybody. So that was my freedom. It was a way to escape, for me and a lot of other kids of my generation too.” Besides the thrill of the game, it’s basketball as a metaphor of unity that continues to nourish this Paris-based Italian.
Róisín Murphy: from trip-hop star to disco siren
In the YouTube comments for Ro?isi?n Murphy’s self-directed video for “Evil Eyes”, someone writes, “You are something else girl, love you.” Another fan adds, “She’s unstoppable, a gem among pearls.” A few users have picked up on the clip’s homage to Ingmar Bergman’s Persona at one minute 40 seconds. It’s often been written that Murphy is too weird for the mainstream. That’s a loaded badge of honour, implying both a kind of horror and abject failure by whoever’s holding the pen.
Walter Pfeiffer’s class of 2016
Four and a half years ago, Dazed ran arguably the most charged coverline in its provocative three-decade history: ‘Is East London Dead?’ But this wasn’t the name of an archly monikered bedroom producer, nor was it an exclusive literary extract from a hot new author. No, it was a serious question. The air had begun to feel different. The Olympics were coming. Ramshackle premises were being replaced by shops featuring the word ‘artisan’.
Divine Comedy | Dazed
In league with the Divine: Catherine McNeil takes centre stage of our May issue, dressed in couture surrounded by a hedonistic court in this exclusive film by Jeff Bark, styled by senior fashion editor Robbie Spencer. McNeil is the Australian model going through her own renaissance, a fixture of all the top tier AW13 catwalks from New York to Paris, walking in nearly 50 shows. Yet away from the camera, she deflects costume drama, telling Dazed: "My style is very simple.
Léa Seydoux: life in the dream
It’s a Tuesday morning like any other in Paris, and Léa Seydoux has arranged to meet me in a cafe in the 14th arrondissement, not far from where the 31-year-old French actress lives. It’s not famous, merely her local, where she can sit in the corner and watch life play out on the street outside. Seydoux is disarmed and disarming, with the power to draw you in regardless of your sex or sexuality.

The inimitable legacy of Hedi Slimane at Saint Laurent
After a four-year transformation that’s seen skyrocketing sales and a radical overhaul of one of fashion’s most prestigious houses, Hedi Slimane has left Saint Laurent.
EXCLUSIVE: Rick Owens x Zebra Katz Video
Back in March, Rick Owens presented his Autumn/Winter '12 womenswear collection in Paris. In a brutal line-up with the devil-may-care elegance of the divine, his pure lines and Old Hollywood spirit were punctuated by an esoteric take on "veils" – here, shredded beanies adorned the face rather than anything resembling bridalwear – while the backdrop to his catwalk was a strip of flames: Paris, quite literally, burning.
The enduring spirit of Sky Ferreira
Pop’s hardest feeler is back – as she prepares to share her long-awaited new album, she reveals why she’ll always choose freedom over faking it TextDean Mayo DaviesPhotographyCollier SchorrStylingRobbie Spencer 16February 2016 Taken from the spring 2016 issue of Dazed. Hedi Slimane’s greatest hits: unpacking Saint Laurent in LA
Most of the audience were VIPs – yes that was Courtney Love front row, chewing gum, spitting it out, sticking it underneath the bench seating and popping in a fresh stick as the 71 models and musicians – 93 looks in total – strutted past. Joan Jett was satisfyingly sat next to Justin Bieber , in a microcosm of badass then and now. The latter air drummed his way through the exclusive soundtrack, ‘She’s Gone’ by PYPY.
Christopher Shannon looks to 1980s suburban Liverpool

Christopher Shannon has the best references in the business. Give him a clipboard and he could do a late night panel show about everyday Britain on one of the news channels.
The Interview: Musician Bill Ryder-Jones AW15
Bill Ryder-Jones has been a professional musician for exactly half his life. Growing up in Merseyside, north-west England, he was first signed when he was 16, but rose to prominence with British band The Coral and as a very, very handy guitarist (as Noel Gallagher has mentioned several times). Indeed his skill for playing lead saw him temporarily join Arctic Monkeys during their AM tour.
