The Akai MPK Mini Plus II Wants to Help You Write the Song
Most MIDI controllers wait for you to bring the idea. The Akai Professional MPK Mini Plus II is built to meet you halfway. I spent time with it, asking one question: Can a compact keyboard actually help me come up with music, not just record it? After running through Chord Mode, Strum Mode, progressions, and the arpeggiator, my answer is a confident yes. Here’s what stood out.
Antares AutoTune Advanced: The Plugin That Finally Keeps Vibrato Human
I sat in with Brian from Antares to run AutoTune Advanced through its paces, and the phrase that kept coming up was “more human.” After spending time with the new DVA engine, the redesigned latency modes, and that 78-note keyboard, I get why. This isn’t a minor UI refresh; it’s the biggest rework of the AutoTune algorithm since the plugin launched. The headline feature is DVA (patent pending), a new vibrato-detection engine.

The Strongest Woman I've Ever Known
I grew up knowing my mom would get breast cancer. It wasn’t a probability. It was an inevitability. See, some people carry something called the BRCA1 mutation, which means the gene that’s supposed to produce the proteins that suppress tumors isn’t working properly. If you have a mutated BRCA1 gene, your risk of developing cancer — especially breast cancer — skyrockets. My mom and her four sisters all had the mutation.

You Better Check Yourselves, Players – The Cauldron
I am not entirely sure when it happened, but we are now living in a very different world than the one in which I grew up. Take a look around you — at your coworkers in the office, at the person whizzing by you at 75 mph on the freeway, even at the members of your family sitting next to you at the dinner table — it feels like everyone is connected, all the time. We check our mentions, update our statuses and upload our images, incessantly and without the slightest worry about the consequences.

If this doesn’t make you value the @Penguins management and ownership, I don’t know what does. The Penguins do anything and everything to put a contender on the ice. And the Pirates just hope you enjoy fireworks night (for increased “dynamic” pricing). https://t.co/pLlIRuzpKP

You Better Check Yourselves, Players
The intent of the NFL's social media policies (with the tacit approval of the owners) is clear: Keep the cash cow well fed by controlling the message and ensuring that the league doesn't get (more) egg on its face. Truth is, the vast majority of the players I know are more than capable of handling their business - either on social media or through opportunities to write at sites like this one - and we should have every right to express ourselves in an uncensored way.

Week 13 in the NFL will feature a unique twist on the league’s rigid uniform policy. For the first time ever, the NFL has given permission to players to wear custom footwear in regular-season games. The #MyCauseMyCleats campaign gives players the chance to design shoes that show their commitment to different charitable causes. Over 500 players — roughly a third of the league — will be taking part in the initiative.

Wear Pink For My Mom, Who Lived to Love
My mom didn’t tell me she had breast cancer before she got a double mastectomy. That was kept a secret, from me at least, because she didn’t want me worrying about her and getting distracted because, well, I’m a mama’s boy. During the middle of my third season at the University of Memphis, she received a diagnosis that required the removal of her breasts and lymph nodes. The diagnosis was no surprise to her, or the rest of us.
