Deanna Paul’s Biography

Deanna is an experienced trial lawyer with a record of success handling high-stakes cases. She represents individuals and corporations in criminal matters, government investigations, and civil litigation, and advises clients and journalists on First Amendment and media law issues.

Before joining Walden Macht & Haran, Deanna was a legal affairs correspondent for the Wall Street Journal and a national and breaking news reporter for the Washington Post. Deanna was part of The Post team that was a finalist for the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in Explanatory Reporting, and has received multiple honors for her journalism, including the New York Press Club Award for political reporting and the Newswoman’s Club of New York's Front Page Award for her reporting in the wake of the ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade.

Deanna also spent six years as a New York City prosecutor, specializing in child homicides, violent crimes against children and other felony sex crimes, and as an adjunct professor of trial advocacy at Fordham University’s School of Law.

Her work has appeared in WIRED, Rolling Stone, the Guardian and the Marshall Project.
