Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
My first gig was as a Navy journalist in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. I covered a plane crash and earned a base commander letter of commendation.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
For a few years - while in journalism school at DINFOS - back in the original cut-and-paste era.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Lois Lane - who wouldn't want a scoop like that?!
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Being a journalist means being curious, communicating clearly without bias, and being as close to first with accurate news as possible.
Who do you wish followed you?
Oprah and Pitbull
Why did you become a journalist?
I was a born messenger. One time at daycare, a fire broke out nearby. I interviewed the firemen on the cause and shared it with everyone.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No, I was on the first crew of my high school TV station. I wanted to be Barbara Walters until I realized I was not a fan of daily makeup.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Never give up. Keep calling your dream job. Mine came from calling the news director for 2 years straight. The door always opens eventually.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Kayaking on the water in Florida, or playing cards with my family. Family is everything in my world.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That it's boring. Bankruptcy and municipal debt can be pretty juicy if you know where to focus.
