Satya Niketan: More than a building collapse
The deaths of seven young students in a Delhi PG collapse cannot be reduced to illegal construction and negligent owners.
The barefoot master: M.F. Husain
Fifteen years have passed since the brush of Maqbool Fida Husain was stilled, yet the canvas of Indian art continues to resonate with his spirit. The Padma Vibhushan awardee is often hailed as the Picasso of India. A maverick painter, Husain redefined the contours of modern Indian artistic expression. He took his final breath in exile in London on June 9, 2011, far from the land that had once celebrated him.
Delivering West Bengal From Its Vice-Laden Politics: Voters Must Draw Strength From Their Electoral Power
As the assembly election in West Bengal, one of India's most politically volatile states, just weeks away, the eastern border state finds itself firmly in the grip of election fever. The political climate has thickened with allegations and counter-allegations, recriminations and rhetoric—each day adding fresh layers of noise to an already charged atmosphere. Amid this din, a recent interview provided a telling glimpse into the state’s prevailing political culture.
India: From Cultural Surplus to Cultural Deficit
Culture, understood as the constellation of learned behaviours, beliefs, and values that shape a society, carries different meanings for each individual. Yet its gradual erosion reveals an uncomfortable reality—one with the power to unsettle. To confront this concern, the article begins by recalling a quintessential example of cultural engagement.
The 5Ps of Indian Politics: Posturing, Populism, Polarisation, Personalism, Phantom Politics
In an age when political discourse permeates nearly every aspect of daily life, genuine political leadership has become one of the scarcest resources across much of the world. Yet a stubborn myth persists—that the mere assumption of power automatically bestows the right, wisdom, or capacity to lead. This fallacy continues to shape our nation, often at the expense of substance, service, and vision.

Is The Equilibrium Lost? Need For Humanity To Reawaken Its Humaneness
If we care to look closely at the people around us, study their attitudes and the tones of their statements, we are apt to sense something unsettling. Smiles seem to have faded from their faces. They sound forever high strung. Patience in short supply, their minds seem toeing on anger and intemperance. Kindness as a human emotion seems to have become obsolete. People appear more reactive, more hostile, and more fragile.
Brushed out: We had a duty to denounce the hate campaigns against Maqbool Fida Husain - Telegraph India
As democracy’s upholders, we had a duty to denounce the hate campaigns against Maqbool Fida Husain, reject those who fuelled them, and call out those who orchestrated them Debasish Bhattacharyya Published 21.07.25, 07:01 AM An illustration of Maqbool Fida Husain Sourced by the Telegraph Fourteen years have passed since the brush of Maqbool Fida Husain was stilled, yet the canvas of Indian art continues to resonate with his spirit.
HT Syndication: Crushed by Celebration: A mirror to our misplaced priorities
India, June 23 -- At a time when our society is overwhelmed by daily concerns, chaos, and confusion, the Chinnaswamy Stadium tragedy - like so many heartbreaking incidents before it - will soon fade into oblivion. As always, we will return to our routines, and the media will quickly move on to newer topics of debate and distraction. What will remain in the cricketing records, however, is Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB's) long-awaited and well-deserved Indian Premier League (IPL) triumph.

A Call to Healing: Honouring Earth, Mothers and Ourselves
Mother’s Day, observed on the second Sunday of May since 1908, is widely celebrated as a tribute to mothers’ love, sacrifice, and unwavering support. Yet, in its purest form, it is more than a celebration, more than a token phrase or a date on the calendar; it is an invocation—calling upon us to honour the nurturing spirit that sustains all life: Mother Earth, our mothers, and ourselves.

Reawakening Our Humanity: Celebrated in Words, Abandoned in Deeds
Septuagenarian Dr. Iain McGilchrist, a world-renowned philosopher, psychiatrist, and neuroscientist, recently addressed a symposium titled The Future of Humanity, where he explored some of the most pressing questions at the heart of our existence—the existence of what is good, beautiful, and true. Reflecting on his lifetime, he observed that these fundamental transcendental values have been increasingly sidelined, decried, debased, and even destroyed.
The unchecked menace of noise pollution is aggravating environmental degradation
It was none other than the Nobel Prize-winning scientist Robert Koch who, as early as 1910, foresaw that 'One day man will have to fight noise as fiercely as cholera and pest'. Robert's words ring truer than ever now, decades later. Global environmental pollution is one of the most serious challenges of our time, with the fight against its very sources proving to be difficult and ongoing. In India, this concern is even more pressing due to a multitude of contributing factors.
The demon called noise
We live in an era of relentless, agenda-driven promotion, aggressive publicity, and cut-throat competition where the use of loudspeakers has been recklessly overamplified Debasish Bhattacharyya Published 18.03.25, 07:46 AM Representational image Sourced by the Telegraph It was none other than the Nobel Prize-winning scientist, Robert Koch, who, as early as 1910, foresaw that “One day man will have to fight noise as fiercely as cholera and pest.” Sound, when loud, unpleasant, or unwanted, is...
Kolkata's protests: Will it herald a new era of youth-propelled social awakening against injustice in India?
In a time when the country’s political landscape has left successive generations disillusioned, eroding faith in the principles of fairness and justice, the "Never-Seen-Before Youthquake" in Kolkata stands as a beacon of hope. The gruesome and heinous incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital served as the tipping point, unmasking the deep-rooted nexus of politicians, officials, and antisocial forces.

Urgency and Hope: A Call to Action for India
During the 70th anniversary of the European Parliament in 2022, Professor Ryszard Legutko, a Polish philosopher, politician, and Co-Chair of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group, observed that the European Parliament is merely a quasi-parliament, alienating millions of voters. In his brief address, he stated: “Madam President, Prime Ministers. Two minutes of truth, of bitter truth.
Prepare your teachers well
Prepare your teachers well Thursday, 05 March 2020 | Debasish Bhattacharyya Technical teachers’ training should be first on the list of priorities of the Govt if we are to produce an employable workforce The need for effective technical teachers’ training is increasing the world over as no country can afford to ignore the impact of technology. Indeed, the rapid advances made in all technical and industrial fields in recent decades have determined the very contours of contemporary civilisation.
Modi’s work is cut out
It seems the goal of achieving a ‘New India’ will elude us if the BJP-led NDA Government at this crucial juncture fails to rethink strategies, offer an invigorated vision and take bold decisions Following Narendra Modi’s massive win in India’s general election this year and securing a larger mandate for a second-consecutive term (the Bharatiya Janata Party increased its seat tally to 303 in 2019 against the 282 it got in the 2014 election) the Prime Minister promised to build a “new India.”...

Why Cong owes an answer
Why Cong owes an answer Saturday, 19 October 2019 | Debasish Bhattacharyya Why Cong owes an answer Saturday, 19 October 2019 | Debasish Bhattacharyya The Congress minus Sonia-Rahul-Priyanka is thinkable but Indian politics without it is unthinkable. The grand old party may be critically weakened but not wrecked as yet Political parties are central to the functioning of a representative democracy because a multi-party system generates different policy options for the public.
Crafting peace a greater dimension of restoring valley’s lost glory
India’s Home Minister Amit Shah’s speech in both the Upper House (Rajya Sabha) and the Lower House (Lok Sabha) was not striking in itself, but his cogent and effective pitch on abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) served to prevent opposition taking steadfast stand against nullification leading to passage of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill, 2019. Whether the scrapping of the much–talked-about Article 370 has been just and proper – only time will tell.

Holding out hope at the time of super majority
BJP led NDA achieved a historic win following marathon seven-phase national elections wherein more than 8,000 candidates from more than 2293 political parties contested to grab 543 seats of the lower house of India’s parliament. The second successive swearing in of BJP led NDA government marks the commencement of the second term of Narendra Damodardas Modi as Prime Minister of India. Genuine political courage is rare, but, it’s not impossible to find.

When politically tinkered Hanuman gets synonymous with destruction
It seems that the world is asking India, “Is this the best that world’s largest democracy has to offer?” At a time when ‘political credibility’ is almost a lost virtue, it’s no wonder politicians ignore the fact that political leadership is as much about them as it is about those they serve. More broadly, a nation’s political culture is to a great extent reflected in politicians’ motives for using power and influence.

In pursuit of Efficient and Decisive Government: Time for Retailoring Notion
In pursuit of efficient, decisive government: Time for re-tailoring notion. India’s first national elections were held in 1952 and sixty-six years later, the country’s hulking democracy is badly constrained by both the political process and governance. HIGHLIGHTS People not for government but the other way around. A wave against the criminalization of politics. The concept of Party-less government as proposed by Jayaprakash Narayan. Introduction of industry professionals in politics.
Uncovering corruption and punishing culprits not enough
Generally, isolated instances do not rise to the level of severe or pervasive needed to establish the gravity of the issue. If, however, it’s widespread, it may suffice to state a claim. It’s true that the tenure of the Narendra Modi dispensation to date managed to avoid mega corruption scandals, but it’s also true that it failed to take corruption and bribery issues head-on creating proper anti-corruption mood or network.
How Do You Solve a Problem Like Joblessness in India?
To compound the issue, what is truly baffling is the idea of ‘gainful employment’ for 460 million Indian workers that focuses on improved quality of work and the income derived from it. Boosting the employment status of young adults and helping employers meet labour force demands, are complementary goals. Drawing up strategies to realise them requires divergent thinking, critical evaluation, introspection and clarity.
Still coming to grips with joblessness
“A man willing to work, and unable to find work, is perhaps the saddest sight that fortune’s inequality exhibits under this sun.” Thomas Carlyle, British historian. We all know that unemployment gives birth to despondency, discontent and distress, but that’s not all; long-term unemployment makes people live their lives in a way they do not wish to.
