1 INTRODUCTION Phosphate (Pi) is a multivalent anion involved in a variety of biochemical processes including as energy currency, cell signaling, formation of the phospholipid bilayer, and the stability of bone as a component of the hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 crystal. The chief regulatory points in Pi homeostasis are dietary absorption from the small intestine, deposition to and resorption from bone, and reabsorption along the renal tubule.
