Farmers in northern New Mexico were shocked to learn Governor Susana Martinez vetoed almost $1 million in funding for water projects that lawmakers from both parties had approved during this year’s session of the New Mexico State Legislature. In her veto message the governor said acequias – or irrigation ditches for which the money had been appropriated – don’t contribute to economic development or create jobs.
