Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Night sports desk, Danbury News Times, Danbury, Connecticut, writing 10-15, three-paragraph stories a night about prep high school sports.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes.

How is social media changing news?

This is a question deserving of a whole interview.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email.

What's your favorite social network?

It's too hard to pick one. Each has its brilliance and each has its frustrations.

Who do you wish followed you?

Bob Dylan

Why did you become a journalist?

Writing was the best way I knew to express myself, and I didn't know how to do anything else.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes. I wrote stories.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

A project on the rural working poor in Connecticut, a magazine story on my mother's decision to die, and a series on the widows of 9-11.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

It's the same advice my journalism professor gave me: Write, write, write, and get it right.
