Abstract Iron is an essential element for most organisms, including hematophagous arthropods, which are critical vectors for dozens of pathogens, seriously affecting the health of human beings and livestock. The mechanisms of iron acquisition by hematophagous arthropods remain incompletely characterized. Symbionts have established nutritionally reciprocal associations with arthropod hosts during long-term coevolution, endowing them with the potential to serve as an iron source.
