Discussion These prospective mechanistic data, derived from healthy adult subjects using a clinically relevant inhaled LPS challenge model, demonstrate that short-duration hyperoxia did not increase pulmonary inflammation despite exposure to an in vivo inflammatory stimulus. We selected BAL IL-8 as the primary outcome given its central role in neutrophil chemotaxis and early pulmonary inflammation.

1. Introduction On 31 December 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) recognized cases of ‘viral pneumonia’ in Wuhan, China, which was later identified as SARS-CoV-2 [1]. By 11 March 2020, the WHO had declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. As of 30 May 2020, over 5.5 million cases had been registered with over 350,000 deaths [2]. To date, there have been over 760 million cases of SARS-CoV-2 confirmed globally and more than 6.9 million COVID-19-associated deaths recorded [3].
