What was your first job as a journalist?

My college newspaper offered paid positions! I began as a columnist then served as arts and entertainment editor my senior year.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, but only for fun at the creativity center at my university, never for "real" work.

How is social media changing news?

Simultaneously allowing people to access news from more sources and quicker, but also allows for faster spread of misinformation.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Fred Flarsky, as portrayed by Seth Rogen in the 2019 romantic comedy Long Shot!

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Being a journalist means never being afraid to ask questions and standing up for the little guy.

Why did you become a journalist?

I love writing and I love telling stories. I've also developed a real passion for editing and helping others improve their writing.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I did, I was a writer who picked all sorts of stories and my high school best friend, whom I'm still friends with today, was editor-in-chief.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

The first ever feature I wrote for a magazine published by the student newspaper I worked for in college, which was a personality profile.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Even if you feel like you're not going in the right direction, all you have is time.

What's your favorite drink?

Lemon iced tea, specifically the PureLeaf one.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

I'm very social and two of my closest friends live in my neighborhood, so probably at their house having dinner or out with them!

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Anything long form, particularly Outside Magazine. I love long personality profiles, exposes, anything super long and informative,

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That it doesn't matter. Sports may not be an essential service, but sport is a very powerful tool for community and connection.
