Mr. Magic - County Highway
The world will burst like an intestine in the sun, the dark turn to granite and the granite to a name, but there will always be somebody riding the bus through these intersections strewn with broken glass among speechless women beating their little ones, always a slow alphabet of rain speaking of drifting and perishing to the air, always these definite jails of light in the sky at the wedding of this clarity and this storm and a woman's turning—her languid flight of hair traveling through...
‘Train Dreams’ by Denis Johnson
Fiction – Kindle edition; Granta Editions; 121 pages; 2021. Denis Johnson’s novella Train Dreams is a perfect little nugget of a book. In just 120 pages, it tells the story of a man living on the American frontier from the late nineteenth century through to the 1960s. First published in 2011, it is essentially a Bildungsroman compressed into novella form, where years can pass in the space of a few pages. The story follows Robert Grainier from childhood into old age.

Battered Heart
"The love of reality unpossessed transfigures us." — William Bronk In the fall of the feral year 1968, Denis Johnson, having been admitted at 19 to a graduate-level poetry workshop on the strength of his writing samples, was proving himself a wunderkind. Everyone in his class at the Iowa Writers' Workshop had to submit work for reading and critique, but his submissions alone were more than juvenilia.

Do pracy jeździ, kiedy praca jest, do domu wraca, gdy kończą się tygodnie znoju. Ten rytm przerywa tragedia - ogień trawi dom, giną ukochane żona i córeczka. Hippies by Denis Johnson
It felt like the International had one last trip left in it. Two shocks had blown and the frame was cracked and quite a bit of the electrical system had gone dark. This thing’s from 1970 and it’s been a while since it went on a ride. But you could feel that last trip coming. And Joey said these people he knew from Austin intended to pick him up in Long Beach on their way to the Rainbow Gathering in the national forest over in north-central Oregon.

Grainer is a laborer who does a lot of different jobs, including building bridges for the train to cross over bodies of water. The engine referred to in the sentence helps drag logs out of the forest. It’s an epic story told in miniature, a slim 116 pages, filled with beautiful sentences like this one.
Of Bats and Men: A Conversation with Poet and Writer Sage Marshall
When I first became aware of Sage Marshall, I considered him a bit of an adversary. Maybe he thought of me that way, too. He worked for Field & Stream as a full-time news editor while I was writing news for MeatEater, and then Outdoor Life. We jockeyed for space in the outdoors headlines, covering many of the same poaching cases, record-busting critters, conservation issues, and viral videos of wildlife eating each other.

Train Dreams (2025) ⭐ 7.6 | Drama
Robert's live is gently lived and not without deep tragedy. The film evokes our own memories, little joys and sadnesses, discoveries, losses, and hopes to bring grace to our self reflection. The film is heartbreakingly beautiful. Acting, editing, direction are just right. Looking forward to more performances from Edgerton. Train Dreams is a film that fully captures an entire life - and an entire era - in a hundred minutes.
