Letter: Living through Animal Farm & Fahrenheit 451
Some 50+ years ago taught while grad school at the University of Kansas, the university required sophomores to learn about the classics, books both from the Greek and Roman literature to the present. Every student had to write their own one-page essay about that week's author, and they had special quizzes were randomly generated from the literature to avoid cheating. Why did I do that? Well, those sophomores had to write essays for the final.
Letter: Happy early adopter of solar and electric cars
The sun, water, and air give life as we know it. My family knew oil and gas decreases over time, called depletion. Some of the first automobiles made were electric. The technology of batteries were not as sophisticated as today. We charge our electric cars by solar panels on our business and home, as early adopters. Our first electric car (a Nissan Leaf) had a range of 100 miles, enough for going to work and errands for a decade with little repairs.
Letter: Sen. Wadack Breaks the Law & Citizens' Trust
Senator Wacky Wadsack (aka, Train-wreck), Arizona does not need a self-indulgent, whiny legislator engaging teenage-age drag race at 70 mph at night. She needs to pay the fine. She was not of state business. As for electric charge, we've had electric cars since 2010. As a scientist, speeding faster would drain the battery faster. Sticking to the posted speed would have gotten her home with reserve.
Do You Know ACE's Are Preventable or Mitigable?
Workshop after workshop asks people to check off their ACE's. Then, presenters tell you about your odds of having all sorts of adverse, unhealthy, or worrisome outcomes. You face doom without mitigation, as the story is told. As a clinician and behavioral scientist, one needs to take a sip of water and some steady breathing before resigning one's self or to affected individuals to the dung heap of life.
Letter: Secret Service Protection for Children of Presidents
Mr. Aufmuth complains about Secret Service protection for the current president's. Perhaps the writer doesn't understand that is to protect the current occupant of the White House need not fear threats to their children or other loved ones. That scenario is a common strategy around the world to overturn or compromise leadership or civil order. Mr. Trump's children had Secret Service protection, as did Mr. Obama and other Presidents. It is a prudent practice.
Getting Good Air and Good Money with an Electric Car
Our planet is a big space capsule, not easy replaced. That is why we have installed solar on our first home some 14 years ago, our business, and our newer home. We purchased the first sold Nissan Leaf in 2010, still performs flawlessly-with 13 years of service only replacing wipers and the auxiliary little car-battery to start the car. We replaced our gasoline car in 2013, Chevy Volt runs about 40 miles on electric most days.
Letter: Re: the March 8. article “Letters to the Editor, March 8”
Letter: Re: the March 8. article “Letters to the Editor, March 8” Arizona seems to have a higher number of recipients of the Darwin Awards to individuals who have supposedly contributed to human evolution by selecting themselves out of the gene pool by dying or becoming sterilized via their own actions.
Evolving the future: Toward a science of intentional change
Abstract Humans possess great capacity for behavioral and cultural change, but our ability to manage change is still limited. This article has two major objectives: first, to sketch a basic science of intentional change centered on evolution; second, to provide examples of intentional behavioral and cultural change from the applied behavioral sciences, which are largely unknown to the basic sciences community.
