Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I began as an independent technology writer covering AI, communication systems, patents, and digital business. Curiosity came first; publishing came second.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Lightly

What's your favorite social network?

Reddit. Think of it as a giant focus group that nobody remembers volunteering for.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Sports Reporting at Long Beach Poly High School

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Write from curiosity, not certainty. The best journalism starts with a real question, follows the evidence, and respects the reader’s time. Be skeptical without becoming cynical, and make complicated subjects easier to understand without pretending they are simple.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

The worst pitches aren't the strange ones—they're the ones that were obviously sent to 10,000 people at once. Nothing says “I carefully researched your work” quite like a press release about celebrity fashion sent to someone covering AI and communication systems.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The Wall Street Journal. It consistently covers the intersection of technology, business, incentives, and policy—where many of the most important stories actually begin.
