Opinion: America’s global competitiveness is built in places like Utah
It’s been a bumpy week for the United States and Canada. Trade negotiations broke down, the U.S. imposed new tariffs on billions of dollars of Canadian goods, and Canada announced matching tariffs. This will impact everything from toilet paper and timber to auto parts and even Christmas ornaments, right in time for the holidays. But the most damaging development may be the collapse in trust.

Voices: SLC can be one of America’s great cities — if we can finish what we started
For more than a century, railroad tracks have cut through the heart of our capital city. They interrupt streets, separate neighborhoods and keep downtown and the west side from ever really being one place. We’ve lived with them so long they feel like the weather — just a condition of living here. They aren’t. They’re a choice we keep making. Years ago, I sold food out of a stall at the Downtown Winter Farmers Market inside the Rio Grande Depot.
City Weekly’s 2026 Pride Issue celebrates the outsiders who built Salt Lake’s counterculture.

The defiance is the part others see: courtroom fights; legislative skirmishes; rainbow flags going up faster than they come down.
If Utah Democrats don't invest in themselves, who will?
This past weekend, the Utah Democratic Party decided not to nominate a Democrat for this year's U.S. Senate election. Instead, a majority of the delegates believe that an independent candidate, Evan McMullin, has a better chance to beat Sen.r Mike Lee this November. Much ink will be spilled, air time filled, and hands wrung. Earnestly, I hope McMullin wins. But I am not here to write about this.
Utah will not stand for partisan gerrymandering
This November, the Utah Legislature will convene to adopt new political maps. They will have two choices before them: listening to the will of the people or drawing new lines that benefit politicians. These maps will define the next 10 years of important decisions in Utah. The work is enormous. We need fair boundaries to have effective representatives in government. One thing is clear, Utah is bigger than ever. The partisan gerrymandering of past redistricting cycles is inappropriate this time.
Derek Kitchen and Ephraim Kum: Let’s all be on the right side of Black (American) history
(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Black Lives Matter protesters shout "Hans up - don't shoot" during a rally for racial equality, at the Utah Sate Capitol on Wednesday, June 3, 2020. By Derek Kitchen and Ephraim Kum | Special to The Tribune | Feb. 12, 2021, 11:30 p.m. For as long as just about any of us can remember, February has always been Black History Month.
Senate Democrats: Utah tax reform plan is unacceptable
This week, the Utah Legislature is to meet in a special session to debate an overhaul of our state’s tax structure. Touted as a large tax cut, a closer inspection of the proposed legislation reveals that the “savings” come from slashing our public education funding while reshuffling taxes in a way that requires working families to pay more up front when buying necessities in exchange for the promise of a little relief at the end of the year.
