Opinion: Matt Rife can be funny without his misogyny
Content Warning: This article discusses misogyny and the objectification of women. The guy who seems to be on everyone’s TikTok algorithm — Matt Rife — has finally infiltrated mine. Over the summer, I became an audience to a clip of him at an unfortunate 4:00 am. I don’t remember his punchline, but it was crowd work, which I think seems like nearly all he does.
A Brief Anatomy of a Bad Poem
Poetry is misunderstood. I repeat my past sentiments on the complexities of poetry, whenever I explore its nuances. It's become a lot more evident now that poetry is being reduced to an aesthetic pleasure. We hence, are engulfed by pages and pages of 'bad poetry'. What is a 'bad poem'? Essentially, a poem that disobeys the very forms and elements of poetry. One that doesn't incorporate a literary framework within, or when employing a literary technique, does so without adding effect.
In a Fix Beside a Ditch
In finishing my summer break by reading Sylvia Plath, I seem to have induced a similar anxiety in my routine. An incumbent misery that swirls over me and makes me concede at frequent hours. I've been thoroughly miserable in the last few days. Demotivated, exhausted and frail at the prospects of the day. It's grown to become an irritability and anxiety which I seem to lose against, and it makes me forfeit my energy.
Musicians Hate Lyrics
No viral song on social media is even remotely close to being lyrically appreciable. Reliant on slang, perhaps even trending topics but ultimately kept very simple. The lyrics themselves almost feel like a supplementary addition, done to allow for a lip-syncing to the song as the melody enthralls the listener. It creates an atmosphere of conversation between the singer and listener.
A Scottish Autumn Wednesday
Under the Scottish August air, bathed in the yellow and tangerine of leaves, she checks the road for puddles, but is left with home’s call—a home she grieves— on Wednesday’s longer eve. Those Indian summers when didi called her pretty and troubled her with sour lemonade: the light, chill and yellow, would see her at home, delayed by the puddles in which her and Reeva played. The walk home was no longer than a few minutes, but didi, ever stout and stoic, stood in her sweat to scold.
The Struggles of Reading Poetry
As seen in the poems of Plath and Angelou I've been struggling to write recently. My mind seems confused after only a few words rendering it incapable of sowing a competent sentence. Even though I suspected it to be exhaustion, the issue lied more with the idea of me struggling to read aptly. Poetry isn't alien to me. I've accustomed myself to reading different genres of it and do not assume a problem in analysing a piece.
The Essence of War Poetry
Joyce Carol Oates' story, "The Bicycle Accident" provides great examples of how written trauma often struggles to impact the reader, and strays away from enhancing pain. In a story that appears to be centralised around guilt and the trauma of inflicting harm through a collision, Oates tries to force a poignant emotional revelation within the reader.
We Need Ships in Poetry
The sea naturally overwhelms the writers about ideas to focus on ships. But even when their lens focusses on this transport, they tend to associate horrific ideas of devastation. I refuse to believe that ships only hold so much value to be associated with their extinction. Even as we speak today, the most notable ship, The Titanic, tends to be remembered because it sank. It's cruel to mistreat these vessels and only corroborate ideas of destruction when thought of making them memorable.
On The Nihilism Around Fine Arts
For an aspect such as art to transition from being scholarly to now simple, the rise of its accessibility explains its demotion the best. Encouraging such high levels of subjectivity allows art to conform to all levels of analytical capabilities, which results in the production of mediocre art. Abstract art is simply poor, lazy art. We must deem some art 'unfit' to be analysed by all, we must declare it to be difficult to understand.
Foreign Odour
In a table you sit in a country you're a foreigner to in a manner taught by the upbringing at home surrounded by five aloof individuals as the interviewer shuffles the disorganised cream sheets of paper and you watch the edges crumble while you fumble as you shudder in silent heaves of discomfort known only to the tremors in the erect hair on your knuckles, heels and wrist.
Lessons About "Insta-Poetry" From a Poetry Snob
Poetry, as I echo, seeks to be devoured. Completing the bare act of just 'reading' it is disrespectful. The rhymes don't roll over your tongue to then just be rendered as an aesthetically pleasing reading experience. Poets don't ramble in poetry through enjambment to simply make it appear in a free-flow. Every image, imperfect stanza structure, jargon which seems encrypted requires a reader. Attention and one's ability to analyse is alien in "Insta-Poetry".
Satire: The anti-pasta antipasto
BREAKING! Utter chaos erupts in UofT as two first-year philosophy geniuses in PHL100, William and Devarya, declare lasagne and spaghetti to be “not pasta.” We hear about this as their friends ache in panic over their seeming descent into madness, fearing that they have acquired the disease of the learned, but they deny this and say “modern problems require modern solutions.” In a charming, captivating, and assertive delivery, they had this to say: “It’s simple.
bittersweet candies
there were pit stops which reminded me of a time to escape from the monstrosity of Raman’s futile attacks on the imperfect curvature transcending above my belly, as the few speared marks made their appearance; it’s a circus of my misery translated into fifteen languages by each member in my class as the four soldiers by my side fought for its censorship, knowing all the while that even the few prickly visible lines will tell a tale of fright, of a gore unable to be scripted in the burning...
PODCAST: The Guestlist
The fitness episode Welcome back to The Guestlist! I’m your host, and today I’m delighted to welcome Mr. Guru Fitness on the pod for an interview on all things ~health and wellness~. Without further ado, gather up your snacks and pop in your earphones. Hi, Guru! Guru: Hi. While I appreciate the gesture of comforting your audience, I’d advise against the snacks and drinks. Snacking isn’t really a habit that I endorse. Uhhh, okay… Let’s just get started with the questions.
Yours, Truly
it’s very easy for me to get my heart broken. always off to dreamland where i become hopeless, and desperate in pursuit of perfection. thoughts crumbling my sanity and overlapping one uncertain jumble which lurks on my mind, a redirection from who i aspire to become; healthy, sane, relaxed. met you at the grocery store, coincidentally bumped into you in the movies, placed the same order in cafés, ultimately walked with and by you along the lake.
