Drivers of individual differences in the sleep behaviour of fallow deer neonates
1 INTRODUCTION Within species, individual differences (inter-individual variation) are necessary for selection to act (Darwin, 1859) while individual plasticity (i.e. intra-individual variation) may buffer against selection (West-Eberhard, 2003). Understanding causes and consequences of intraspecific variation at the individual, population and species level has consequently attracted much interest (Dall et al., 2012; Dochtermann et al., 2019; Magurran et al., 1998; Sih et al., 2004).
Sex differences in the relationship between maternal and foetal glucocorticoids in a free-ranging large mammal
Abstract Maternal phenotypes can have long-term effects on offspring phenotypes. These maternal effects may begin during gestation, when maternal glucocorticoid (GC) levels may affect foetal GC levels, thereby having an organizational effect on the offspring phenotype. Recent studies have showed that maternal effects may be different between the sexes. How maternal GC levels precisely relate to foetal levels is, however, still not completely understood.

Testosterone in ancient hair from an extinct species
Traditionally, endogenous testosterone has been measured in the circulation through blood samples. However, this matrix is not available for extinct species. Hair, on the other hand, is more resilient in withstanding the wear and tear of time. Hair samples have been used for genetic analysis, with DNA sequenced from >50 000 14 C year old Siberian mammoths ( Mammuthus primigenius ) (Gilbert et al . 2007 , 2008 ).
