The UN can’t reform itself with yesterday’s leaders
If one topic has dominated my inbox over the past year, it has been about the reforms needed at the United Nations. The current secretary-general kicked off the UN80 Initiative for reform, and there seems to be a broad consensus that the U.N. should become more agile, more relevant, and able to address the crises of our time.
Do COP food systems talks work in the real world?
Dhanush Dinesh is the founder of Clim-Eat, a think-and-do-tank for food and climate. When the Stade de France in Paris is filled to capacity, it holds 81,400 people. You would then need another 2,484 to reach the number of badge-wearing participants at last year’s UN COP28 climate change conference in Dubai. This illustrates the sheer size of what was the world’s most important climate-focused event in 2023. But it also begs the question, do these annual ‘mega-gatherings’ actually deliver anything?
Opinion: What I learnt from burnout in my climate startup journey
I woke up one day last year feeling really tired. So tired I could barely get out of bed. I thought I had the flu, or maybe COVID-19. While usually the worst is over in a few days, I waited for 10 days and wasn’t getting better. When I finally went to the doctor, they said I had no physical problems and this could be a mental health matter. I went to a psychologist, who said my symptoms might suggest I was heading for a burnout. What? Me? How?? It’s true: I’d been working a lot.

Eat less meat is message for rich world in 'Food's First Net Zero Plan'
The world's most-developed nations will be told to curb their excessive appetite for meat as part of the first comprehensive plan to bring the global agrifood industry into line with the Paris climate agreement. The global food systems' road map to 1.5C is expected to be published by the United Nations' Food & Agriculture Organization during the COP28 summit next month.
Time for Businesses to Walk the Talk on Food and Climate
Addressing sustainability in the food and agriculture sector is a must at this year’s COP28. COP28, the annual climate summit, will be held in the UAE in less than three weeks. The summit will mark the conclusion of the first Global Stocktake (GST) since the Paris Agreement. The GST is a critical process that will assess global progress towards meeting the 1.5°C goal. It will also identify any remaining gaps and opportunities for increased action.
Opinion: Our food system org failed on several fronts and that's OK
Last year, Devex published an article about me and the organization I founded, Clim-Eat, dubbing it the food and climate organization “designed to fail.” It is true, in the sense that we believe that tackling the food and climate crises requires big risks to be taken, risks with innovations and systemic reforms. Some of those risks will inevitably result in failed ventures.

As well as marking the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and welcoming King Charles III to the throne, she must also navigate two simultaneous crises.
Regulating Big Data: Contextualising CCI Probe Into WhatsApp's Privacy Policy
To print this article, all you need is to be registered or login on Mondaq.com. Big Data presents as much of a challenge for competition regulators as it does for privacy regulation. It involves balancing multiple considerations – on the one hand, collection and processing of extensive data allows businesses to better serve their customers. On the other, it could create significant entry barriers to new market participants and increase consumer dependency on a single or a limited set of offerings.

Agriculture in a changing climate: Keeping our cool in the face of the hothouse
Introduction The heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, is the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs; United Nations, 2015). These call for urgent action by all countries to end poverty and hunger, improve health and education, reduce inequality and spur economic growth, while at the same time tackling climate change and working to preserve the planet’s natural resources.
