"Why should we worry?"
New Niger prime minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine expressed willingness to hold talks with the West African Economic Community, ECOWAS. However, he also stressed the military government would not allow a political path to be imposed on it, saying it was acting according to the will of the people and their desire for sovereignty.

Helsinki could become a 'sanctuary city', as the new right-wing government continues to crack down on undocumented migrants. The latest move by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's coalition government, which includes the far-right anti-immigrant Finns Party, would roll back legislation brought in at the start of the year by ex-PM Sanna Marin, which required local authorities to provide free basic healthcare for paperless migrants wherever they are in the country.

Mali: Europe Must Maintain Relations With Mali
The EU's decision to limit the training of Malian soldiers is correct and long overdue. But Europe must not forget Mali and leave it to its own devices, writes Dirke Köpp. First there were whispers, then there were rumors, and now it's finally been confirmed: The EU will stop training Malian army personnel and the National Guard -- and it's right to do so. For months there has been serious doubt over the sincerity and transparency of the Malian transitional government's policies.

Europe must maintain relations with Mali - Dirke Köpp
First there were whispers, then there were rumors, and now it's finally been confirmed: The EU will stop training Malian army personnel and the National Guard — and it's right to do so. For months there has been serious doubt over the sincerity and transparency of the Malian transitional government's policies. Since the military coup d'etat, there have been no signs that the army is interested in returning the country to democracy anytime soon.
Mali: Opinion - Focus in Mali Needs to Be On People, Not the Military
Nobody in Mali is surprised by the withdrawal of French and EU troops. It is time to review old strategies and to stop working with corrupt elites, says DW's Dirke Köpp. After many threats in this vein, and as many postponements, on Thursday France and its EU partners finally announced that they would be withdrawing their troops from Mali. They said that the plan was to continue the fight against terrorism in the Sahel region from a different country.

Niger's Bazoum - We Need Technological Assistance
Amid growing Islamist violence in the Sahel, Niger's new President Mohamed Bazoum explains how he plans on tackling terrorism in his country. Mohamed Bazoum was sworn in as president in April in Niger's first democratic transfer of power. He now leads the country ranked as the world's poorest on the UN's 2020 Human Development Index. Niger also is being ravaged by violence from Islamic extremists and armed groups active in the border regions with Mali and Burkina Faso.
Cote d'Ivoire: Opinion - Ivory Coast Needs New Men - or a Woman
If the old guard of politicians were to finally step down, Ivory Coast might have a real chance for peace at long last, writes Dirke Köpp. A 1980s German pop star, Ina Deter, once had a hit singing: "I'll spray it on every wall: the country needs new men." These lyrics can be easily applied to the election in Ivory Coast. But while Ina Deter was primarily concerned with providing Germany with more good looking men, Ivory Coast is searching for a capable leader.
Mali: Opinion - Mali Votes Amid Coronavirus Fears, Jihadist Threats
Mali's parliamentary election has exposed voters to unnecessary risks. And Europe's recently announced deployment of more boots on the ground will not solve the country's security crisis, says DW's Dirke Köpp. Voters in Mali had to make a choice on Sunday, one that may be likened to choosing between a plague and cholera. Asking Malians cast their ballots in the country's parliamentary election, on one hand, exposed them to risks of contracting COVID-19 or becoming a victim of a jihadist attack.
25 Years On, Deadly Effects of Rwandan Genocide Are Still Being Felt
Stroll through the Rwandan capital, Kigali, today and you’ll encounter well-kept streets, new skyscrapers and business centres – a modern city. And yet, 25 years ago, these same streets – and roads throughout the country – were lined with hundreds of thousands of corpses. The putrid smell of decay hung in the air.
Congo-Kinshasa: Opinion - DR Congo Still Plagued By Chaos
opinion By Dirke Köpp First the voting was delayed, now the results are being contested. It has been a difficult election for the Democratic Republic of Congo and its citizens, who are longing for peace, says DW's Dirke Köpp. It was a huge surprise. Instead of President Joseph Kabila's chosen candidate, Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, it was Felix Tshisekedi who was declared the winner of the presidential elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) during the early hours of Thursday.
Chad: An Emperor for Chad?
By Dirke KöppChad has a new constitution which grants the president absolute power. This is anything but a democracy -- and the West is looking away, says Dirke Köpp. Chadian President Idriss Deby crowned himself emperor on Monday -- at least in a figurative sense. After lawmakers voted for a change to the constitution which affects the presidential system, the president now has almost unlimited power in his country.
Migration Dilemma: DW-Debatte in Guinea
West Africa: Dw's 'Migration Dilemma' Builds Dialogue in West Africa
By Dirke KöppThousands of people have died in the Mediterranean Sea while seeking more sustainable living conditions in Europe. Despite various efforts by African and EU governments to curb migration, little has changed for refugees. Funded by Germany's Foreign Ministry, the DW multimedia project "The Migration Dilemma" hosted a town debate in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, with the hope of discouraging young people from attempting the dangerous trip across the Mediterranean Sea.
Chad: Judgment On Habre Sets Good Precedent
opinion By Dirke KöppIt took far too long to put Chadian ex-dictator Hissene Habre on trial. Yet because the verdict was handed down by an African court, it sends a robust message across Africa and beyond, writes Dirke Köpp. Victims of the dictator Hissene Habre, who ruled Chad from 1982 to 1990, had to wait a long time for justice. For more than a quarter of a century, there was no official recognition of the suffering they had endured.
Africa: Silence On Abuses in Africa Is Complicity
By Dirke KöppBurundians are being disappeared for protesting the president's illegal rule. Heads of state across Africa use violence to maintain their power. What is the world doing about it? Not enough, DW's Dirke Köpp writes. Some African leaders cling to power with an enraging shamelessness. The friendlier ones might buy their opponents' silence with monetary gifts or attractive government positions. Many others conduct their coercion more violently.
