What was your first job as a journalist?
An editorial I wrote for my junior high school newspaper in the '70s.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Jack Kerouac.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
My memoir - focused on my years in Japan.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Journalism (and any other writing for publication) has to be a labor of love. Don't expect to become rich from writing.
What's your favorite drink?
Asahi Super Dry.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
In the nearby park or alongside the nearby river - going for a long walk or jog.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
New York Review of Books.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That China (where I currently live) is communist. Actually, it's very capitalist.
