Nurses are not physicians
Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) perform a vital, important function in our health care delivery system. I value them as members of my own care team and rely on them to provide excellent patient care. However, they are not physicians, any more than I am a nurse. Texas is correct to keep its team-based care approach. It ensures patients receive care from each member of the patient care team, based on his or her knowledge, training and expertise.

Americans demand customization and choices among service providers in most aspects of their lives but, strangely, are stuck with a one-size-fits-all model of public education. Some of those decisions will directly shape the future of Texas health care, including how and who offers care to patients and what roles various parties play within the healthcare system. Medical advice must inform medical decisions of any kind to prevent known and unexpected consequences.

That's why the Texas Medical Association is involved in a case before the Texas Supreme Court to stop marriage and family therapists from diagnosing mental disease or disorder.
Does the government know what it's doing to physicians?
Physicians spend almost twice as much time each day typing on computers and filling out paperwork as they do seeing patients. That astonishing conclusion comes from research published this week in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Just think about that. How would you feel if you spent two hours documenting every hour of work that you do? How would your boss feel about it? You’d be depressed and frustrated; your boss would probably be angry as hell. Patients should be up in arms over this report.
