Addressing the Data Storage Crisis
Our increasingly digitized world is creating more data every year, including videos from ubiquitous smart phones, observations from billions of sensors and surveillance cameras, output from artificial intelligence, and much more. Until now, exponential growth in data storage capacity has largely kept pace with the flood of data at a steady cost. This trend may not continue, according to John Monroe at Furthur Market Research, who for almost 25 years, until 2022, was an analyst at Gartner.

Faster Integer Programming
Many important practical computations, such as scheduling, combinatorial, and optimization problems, use techniques known as integer programming to find the best combination of many variables. In these problems, some or all of the variables are restricted to integer values, which requires exponentially greater resources to solve than if the variables could take any value.

A Quantum Leap in Factoring
In the mid-1990s, Peter Shor, at AT&T Bell Labs and then one of its heirs, AT&T Labs, devised the first algorithms that one day could exploit the intrinsic parallelism of quantum computing. In particular, Shor, now at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), showed that quantum techniques could be exponentially faster than any classical computer at finding the factors of a very large number, a task whose difficulty is key to the security of widely used public-key cryptography techniques.
More Efficient Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing
Quantum computing has been making steady progress toward large and reliable systems. Hundreds of qubits (quantum bits) have been integrated and experimentally argued to outperform classical computing in specialized cases. The fidelity of qubits also has improved, but their high sensitivity to outside influence means they will always be much more fidgety than traditional electronics, and truly useful quantum computing will need ways to correct the inevitable errors.

Post-Quantum Cryptography
2 days ago A new range of garish clothes claims to hide you from surveillance cameras. The knitted garments use tech-derived patterns to fool A.I. into thinking the wearer is an animal. Italian fashion-tech startup Cap_able describe their Manifesto Collection as a "wearable algorithm to protect our identity". It uses a technological system capable of transposing images (called adversarial patches) onto a knitted fabric that can be used to deceive so-called people detectors in real time.

Focus: Material Strongly Deformed by Magnetic Field
March 4, 2011• Phys. Rev. Focus 27, 9 A material filled with nanometer-sized particles could deform dramatically in a magnetic field. It may lead to improved magnetic materials for devices. Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 105703 (2011) Shape shifters. Nanometer-scale particles that naturally form within a metallic alloy could cause its shape to change dramatically in a magnetic field, a theory predicts. Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 105703 (2011) Shape shifters.
Focus: Neutron Star Formation Could Awaken the Vacuum
October 1, 2010• Phys. Rev. Focus 26, 14 During the formation of a neutron star, the energy of nearby empty space could grow to exceed that of the star’s mass. Blowing up again. A theory predicts that under some circumstances, the energy of the empty space around a neutron star (bright spot at center, surrounded by supernova remnant) could exceed the energy of the star’s mass. Blowing up again.
