Six considerations for those seeking to adopt a child alone
Adoption in Scotland is a court based process. Only the court can grant an adoption order. The relevant legislation is the Adoption and Children (Scotland) Act 2007. The legislation provides that a child can be adopted by a) a couple who are married to each other or are in an enduring family relationship; or b) a single person.

The changing views on post adoption contact
There is no doubt that the adoption of a child is a life changing event. Whilst it may be tempting to view the child's new life with their adoptive family as a "fresh start", it is becoming more widely recognised that there may be benefits to children in maintaining a link with their biological family. When considering a petition for adoption, the court will asked to consider whether contact with the child's birth family ought to be granted to allow contact to continue post adoption.
Understanding kinship care
If a child is unable to live with their parents, for example due to lack of parental care, parental substance abuse or other risk of harm to the child, the local authority has a duty to consider the child's extended family as alternative or kinship carers before considering foster care.
Embracing Equity in Family Law
Wednesday 8th March 2023 is International Women's Day. This year the global campaign theme is #EmbraceEquity. As the organisers are keen to point out, equity and equality are not the same thing. It is quite possible to treat people of differing genders in ways which promote equity, whilst not treating them identically. It is equity, rather than equality, which we strive for in family law in Scotland.
Sperm donation & pre-conception agreements: The legal issues
For those who are struggling to conceive a child, the creation of an embryo using donated sperm could be lifechanging. As well as creating a baby, however, the procedure could create a whole host of legal problems in the future. The law governing the process can be found in the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 2008. This legislation deals with all aspects of assisted reproduction. Its provisions cover the process for both heterosexual and same sex couples.

Syrians disagree on how to pursue justice: So what’s next?
To effectively promote lasting peace, responses to the violence in Syria must account for incompatible—and even irreconcilable—demands for justice. A Syrian child hold a Turkish flag in front of pre-Baath Syrian Flag during a rally for the 10th anniversary of the Syrian war in Istanbul, Turkey on 13 March 2021. More than 3.6 million Syrians live in Turkey as a result of the decade-long conflict in their home country.
Protesting for racial justice, met with excessive force Original
McKay and Heisler reflect on the role of medical personnel when treating patients victims of excessive police force. Black Lives Matter protesters against racism and police brutality clash with local police and federal agents in downtown Portland, Oregon, USA, 27 July 2020.
Dangerous use of crowd-control weapons against medics and protesters in Portland, OR
On July 28, 2020, we interviewed a medic who had responded the preceding week to a woman calling for medical assistance at a protest against police brutality in Portland, OR, USA. He was wearing garb clearly marked with “medic”, a white helmet covered with bright pink crosses, and red crosses on his backpack and both shoulders. As he approached the injured woman, he saw a security official point him out to another man dressed in camouflage-coloured fatigues who was holding a grenade launcher.
Attacks against health-care personnel must stop, especially as the world fights COVID-19
Physicians, nurses, and other front-line health-care workers have been celebrated in many countries as heroes for their work during the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet not everyone appreciates their efforts and contributions. Since the beginning of this pandemic, headlines have also captured stories of health-care personnel facing attacks as they travel to and from health-care facilities. Nurses and doctors have been pelted with eggs and physically assaulted in Mexico.
Should you be “Sharenting”? | Lexology
United Kingdom
April 10 2019 In the ever changing online world, a new word is becoming more commonly used. That word is “sharenting”. It refers to the increasing trend for parents to share photographs of their offspring on social media. For the most part, the fallout from this will be stroppy teenagers who are horrified at their parents tagging them in posts which do not show them in the most flattering of lights (in their opinion).
How Trickery and Trauma at the U.S.-Mexico Border Aided Family Separation
After days of travel, fleeing abuse or persecution at home, a migrant mother finally reaches the United States, unsure of her fate and desperately seeking a better life for her and her family. Clutching her child’s hand, she’s told by the authorities that someone will look after her daughter while she appears before a judge to explain why she crossed the border and is claiming asylum in the United States. She cautiously agrees, because, in truth, she has little choice but to comply.
Taking children abroad | Lexology
With the best summer weather we’ve seen in Scotland and the rest of the UK for years, you may be wishing you’d booked a staycation! But, as is tradition many parents will be planning to take their children abroad for a family break in the sun. If the family unit remains intact, this may a relatively stress free process. If, however, parents have separated, the arrangements may cause a few more headaches.

U.N. General Assembly can't let Syria become another Rwanda
Presidents, prime ministers and foreign secretaries gathered in New York this week for the opening of the 71st annual U.N. General Assembly. As has become custom, they will take turns at the podium calling for an end to the bloodshed in Syria, a conflict that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and has led to the largest displacement of people since World War II.
Conversations: One Doctor’s Struggle for Justice
The only way to reinstate peace and stability in Syria is to document ongoing crimes in the hopes that those responsible will some day be brought to justice, according to a doctor working with Physicians for Human Rights along the Turkish border. Throughout the past five years of conflict in Syria, the global nonprofit Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) has documented countless targeted and indiscriminate strikes on hospitals and doctors across the country.
