Week 3, Part 3: Video Upload and Streaming Architecture Works From Creators To Viewers.
Here is a behind-the-scenes tour of the architecture that powers video upload and streaming experience — from creators to viewers. Everything begins with our users — the content creators. When a creator uploads a video, they interact with our front-end interface (think: the web app or mobile app), which is backed by CloudFront for fast delivery and caching. The uploaded video then gets stored in Amazon S3 (our trusty file storage).
Week 3, Part 1: Getting Into Cloud Architecture (After a Sinus Battle)
Took a two-week hiatus (not by choice). Long story short: I got wrecked by the worst sinus infection I’ve ever had. Just when I thought I was bouncing back — follow-up ear infection. Your boy was down bad. I’m mostly back to normal now (ear’s still a little off), but modern medicine is getting me through it. Anyway, let’s get back into cloud engineering! This week I dove into some core cloud architecture concepts — the stuff that helps shape how applications are built, scaled, and maintained.
Week 2: Git, Cloud Architecture, and Understanding High Availability
I took a short break from learning the cloud to run and lead a hands-on AI workshop during Juneteenth in my hometown. The turnout was pretty good! Now that it’s wrapped up, I’m back in the cloud engineering groove and continuing this learning journey. This week, I focused on Git (in a cloud context), cloud architecture principles, and some of the more complex — but super important — concepts like high availability and fault tolerance.
This Isn’t a Flaw in the System-It Is the System
We live in a world where racism isn’t just a set of isolated incidents but a pervasive thread woven through every major system and institution that shapes our daily lives. The evidence surrounds us, yet many “fail to see it.” The roots of racism are deeply ingrained into the fabric of society. For example, something as simple as redlining, where financial institutions deny loans for specific neighborhoods based on race, is one such tool of racism.
To Reparate or Not Reparate: A Nation’s Reckoning with Its Past
We all know the United States has a complicated past. One full of blood, tears, and vile acts. If you are like me, then you probably have pondered on how much the United States has paid for its troubled past. The short answer—not enough. Reparations are and should be a human right. In 1865, African Americans were promised 40 acres and a mule. After the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, President Andrew Johnson rescinded the offer and returned all 400,000 acres back to the Confederate land owners.
Repair of leukemia-associated single nucleotide variants via interallelic gene conversion
Abstract CRISPR-Cas9 is a useful tool for inserting precise genetic alterations through homology-directed repair (HDR), although current methods rely on provision of an exogenous repair template. Here, we tested the possibility of repairing heterozygous single nucleotide variants (SNVs) using the cell′s own wild-type allele rather than an exogenous template.

The role of migration in mutant evolution in fragmented populations
New Results Jesse Kreger, Donovan Brown, Natalia Komarova, Dominik Wodarz, Justin Pritchard doi: https://doi.org/10.1101/2021.06.09.447669 Abstract Mutant evolution in fragmented populations has been studied extensively in evolutionary biology. With an increased focus on evolutionary dynamics in medical research, quantification of mutant load in fragmented populations with varying levels of migration has become especially important.

Enable Ask Before Closing Multiple Tabs in Microsoft Edge
I recently enabled vertical tabs in Microsoft Edge. The problem is I accidentally close all my tabs now. I searched for a way to be asked before closing a window with multiple tabs like other browsers, but I had no luck. Well until I found a way to enable it with experimental features. To begin open Edge and type the following in the address bar: edge://flags This will take you to the Experiments page where you can enable experimental features.
My first impressions of K8S
So, I am taking my first vacation in four years and I thought there would be no better time to move LoECDA.com to K8S! In the Container Orchestration wars, I think Kubernetes is leading by a large margin. It seems to be what all the cool kids are doing. I believe the best way to learn something is to use it. So, I decided to move LoECDA.com to K8S. My team’s website is .NET Core running inside of a Linux container. Before this weekend we were using the Docker support built inside of App Service.

Ziv Rafalovich joins Donovan Brown to introduce Azure Dedicated Host, which is a service that provides physical servers - able to host one or more virtual machines - dedicated to one Azure subscription. Dedicated hosts are the same physical servers used in our data centers, provided as a resource. You can provision dedicated hosts within a region, availability zone, and fault domain. Then, you can place VMs directly into your provisioned hosts, in whatever configuration best meets your needs.

Dissecting the Definition – Donovan Brown – Medium
In 2015, I wrote a blog post titled What is DevOps? Little did I know what an impact that post would have on my career. In the blog post, I do as many have and attempt to define DevOps. The reason I attempted to define DevOps was because I had just taken a role as a Program Manager on the then Visual Studio Team Services team focused on DevOps. With DevOps as my primary focus, being able to define it was crucial. I labored over the definition for thirty (30) days.
