Editor’s note: This poem is part of the Work and Hope series. every year she plowed neat furrows of stitches upon a quilt or two. she saved old clothes, took them apart, mounded colours as vegetables or fruit to preserve into patterns, puzzles, softly- rounded landscapes, memories of what she wore. for her daughter’s special quilt, she purchased fabric instead.
Your one dear life
Editor’s note: This poem is part of the Work and Hope series. Oh how you love your one dear life, this thrust of spade in pungent loamy earth, turning it, softening it, hands on shaft and grip, foot pressing the blade, your blood coursing strong, limbs limber, greeting this fertile ground and ground as it yields greeting you back, and seeds will soon be sown, buried, and you’re dreaming as you work of green, of sprigs and leaves, of burrowing roots, of harvest to eat and to preserve.
Because of the Postcards
When I mention I’m taking a tour to the Caucasus, the first question I generally get is “Where’s that?” Between the Black and Caspian Seas, I say, hands rising and separating. Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia. The next question is usually “Why?” Then I rush on to explain, as briefly as I can, that my grandfather served there in the First World War, when the Caucasus were part of the Russian Empire fighting the Ottoman Empire, which was allied with Germany.
Reversal
Skip to content The boy’s tongue is thick and inexact and his lips will not arrange themselves as they should, the sound is not crisp, not correct, though the therapist knows his thoughts are precise as a knife. She’s tired, her last session that day. She understands as she coaches him that their disabilities must be reversed. He to speak and her razored impatience to widen, grow idle in her mouth her cut words blunted, her competence in disarray.

The Chat with JD Derbyshire
Author Miriam Toews appears as a fictional character in the book, and she also gives what must be one of the most incredible blurbs in history. How does it feel having her in your corner? It was such a long shot, but I asked my editor Beth Gibson to reach out to Miriam Toews to ask if she’d read the book. I never expected she would. In fact, I worried that I might get in trouble, that Miriam Toews would tell me the book couldn’t describe JD as a figment of her imagination.

What You Get at Home
by Dora Dueck Description Full of longing and melancholy, the stories in What You Get at Home find comfort and understanding in the unlikeliest of places. In “The Rocking Chair,” a piece of furniture simultaneously divides a family and heals old wounds. In a small pool of light and her favourite book the narrator in the title story finds a sense of belonging and purpose.
