Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I began writing obituaries and weddings for a weekly newspaper many years ago.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yep, I taught myself typing on an old manual keyboard.

How is social media changing news?

Social media doesn't give us time to intelligently reflect on the significant issues of the day. It dumbs down learning, lacks perspective

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

I don't know of any "fictional" journalists I like. I prefer real ones.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Journalism is a sacred duty to inform the public, to help sort out the difference between promotional hype and useful substance.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

Don't know

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Publishers seeking book reviews should email me a query. Sorry, we don't accept self-published books for review or

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Microsoft 365, Wordpress

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter

Who do you wish followed you?

More publishers of all sizes.

Why did you become a journalist?

I love the written word and how it reveals human nature.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No, but I was running a weekly newspaper at age 19.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

There have been so many stories it's hard to say. Investigative pieces are probably my favorite.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Read, read, read. Read the fine print. Discover what others miss. Think deeply about your subjects.

When's the best time to pitch you?

The first week or two of each month is best for the first-of-the-month edition.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Billy and Ava by Doug Bailey

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

A pitch from a man boasting that he was the next Stephen King and will sell millions of copies. Never rate your work to an editor.

What's your favorite drink?

Chardonnay, and good old water, of course.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

I am petting my dog.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Editor & Publisher Magazine, PW, Publishers Marketplace

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

Our editorial services for writers are sometimes overlooked. We don't hype our services. Quality is in the work, not in empty promotion.
