Surrey Space Centre delivers analysis of space weather radiation storm
Image By Dotted Yeti / copyright Shutterstock Backed by £100,000 from the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), researchers at the Surrey Space Centre will collate data from these dense sensor networks across the UK, US, Germany and Australia to reconstruct the event in greater detail. Typically used to monitor water levels in soil, these sensors work by measuring neutron radiation near the Earth’s surface.
Collaboration to support in-orbit pharmaceuticals manufacturing
Image By Dotted Yeti / copyright Shutterstock The UK is committed to advancing its leadership in space-enabled manufacturing. In-Orbit Manufacturing (IOM) is one subset of the wider In-Orbit Servicing, Assembly and Manufacturing (ISAM) market. It represents a transformative opportunity to produce materials and products in space that offer superior quality and performance compared to those manufactured on Earth.
The origins of 7 wildlife idioms
“She has a bee in her bonnet”; “We had a whale of a time!”; “Cat got your tongue?” You’ve all heard these animal idioms, and you—for the most part—probably understand what they mean in modern language. But do you know where they came from? (That last phrase, according to one theory, came about because in the Middle Ages, liars and blasphemers were punished by having their tongues cut out and fed to the king’s cats.
It’s amazing! Why these Canadian animals are so resistant to disease
Holy immunity, Batman! Even though they carry all kinds of illness—more than 130 viruses, some of them deadly to humans—bats don’t seem to get sick from any of them. The reason? A bat has the distinction of being the world’s only flying mammal. And flying isn’t easy. Mid-flight, a bat’s body temperature soars to over 100°F, and its heart pounds at 1,000 beats per minute.
The Three Great Tragedies of COVID
COVID-19 has produced three great tragedies in the U.S. The public is aware only of the first. Two greater tragedies are carefully ignored by the press. For the past 18 months, Americans have been bombarded on every platform and news outlet with the threat to our lives of coronavirus disease. First noted in late 2019, the virus acquired the name COVID-19 or simply COVID.
