How can Gen Z (and younger Canadians) learn how to spend and save responsibly?
Here’s the answer to this week’s reader question about teaching Gen Z to save. I want to know how to effectively educate our children (belonging to a generation targeted by social media influencers) on responsible spending and saving strategies. —Jim How can I teach my kids to spend and save responsibly? Many Canadian parents struggle with this question. They know that handling money is an important life skill, but they’re not always sure how to teach their kids smart spending and saving habits.

Perspective | The lasting nature of teacher-students relationships
Earlier this summer I was invited to return to somewhere special. I was invited to see some very incredible human beings do something pretty amazing. Graduate. This group of (now) young adults were a very special group of students. And they were very special to me. I had just come off of my worst year in teaching. I literally almost quit that summer. And in walks this group of students: kind, intelligent, sincere, accepting. The list goes on.
Perspective | Learning from COVID-19: What principals told us
As state leaders, policymakers, and public school systems across North Carolina debated when and how to return safely to in-person learning, WakeEd Partnership hosted three focus groups to discuss remote learning and school re-entry with Wake County Public Schools students, teachers, and principals. This three-part series is a reflection on what was shared from each group.

Much has been posted in the past few weeks regarding districts’s individual plans to move into plan B or plan C. Many districts and charter schools have selected plan B, while others have opted for plan C. Even prior to the governor’s announcement, districts carefully considered what their plans would like if we moved into plan A, B, or C, contemplating the nuances of what each plan option implicated for students, teachers, and families.
Why Medicaid - EducationNC
May 1 was another day for me; albeit, not in my normal classroom. Instead, I joined with thousands of other teachers from across the state and took my classroom to the streets. For me, it was just another day; but for the one pictured on my chest, it was an important day. I marched for many reasons, foremost among them, my students. But May 1 was a little more personal. This child asleep against my chest is why I marched on May 1.
Passion projects: Engaging students in their own learning
One of the greatest challenges for classroom teachers is providing organic opportunities for student agency. When agency is provided, it also happens to be the most rewarding experience for both teachers and students alike. Student agency is not simply curating an entire list of options for students to choose from and saying “follow these steps.” Rather, it is turning the responsibility of choice over to the student and allowing them to fully guide their own process of learning.
Three ideas for addressing key charter schools problems
Charter schools have taken a bad rap over the past decade; rightfully so. Nationally, charters are consistently in the news for their political divides, their accountability (or lack thereof), and sometimes for their more shocking movements. As a teacher who has worked for several years both in traditional and in charter schools, and as the most recently named North Carolina Charter School Teacher of the Year, I believe it’s time to pull up our socks and take a dash of humility.
Bike locked to my bike - scam?
I had the misfortune to find my bike locked to another on a rack downtown after a meeting this morning. I was hoping it was a mistake that the person would have dealt with by the evening commute. No dice. Has anyone else had this happen? Is it a theft scam? Tags: Share Tweet Facebook Facebook Views: 229 ▶ Reply to This

Perseverance Learned in PreK Serves Students Through Schooling & Beyond
As a current middle grades educator, I sit in a minority within my field, as I have previously been an elementary grades educator serving in three different grade levels. Prior to my elementary teaching experience, I served for almost two years as a lead classroom teacher in a PreK program. I earned one of two Bachelor’s degrees in Early Childhood Education. And now…? Additionally, I now have an almost three-year-old daughter entering her first year of PreK experience.

Waterproof bike clothing...for fatsos???
So...I registered for Bike the Drive. And it occurred to me...it's rain or shine. What if it rains?? Well...I don't have waterproof stuff. In fact...I don't really wear bike-specific clothing when I'm out...just a general athletic-style shirt that I can change out of when I get to work...and if it looks like it's going to rain, I stay off the bike.
What's the fastest you've ever gone on a bicycle?
26mph. I was on Sheffeld near Addison. I had a tail wind. It's a little downhill grade. By the time I hit the empty intersection I was wiping tears away from the wind and focusing on holding the bike steady. Tags: ▶ Reply to This

Downtown Chicago double-parkers, beware: Fines to triple to $300

LFT Separation Ardmore to Montrose
I'm a little behind the times, on hearing that's what they'll do between Montrose and Ardmore. Wouldn't be surprised, if when I was trying to save time and there weren't a lot of people out walking or running, went on biking the old route. Don't get me wrong, I have walked(more than I have biked) the proposed new route, and like that too. But it is only a half additional mile, so maybe I'll adapt to this. Any schedule on when construction of this portion, will start?
