Throughout her career, Rema Reynolds Vassar, PhD has dedicated herself to advocating for education, mainly focusing on the needs of marginalized, overlooked, and struggling individuals within educational settings. This focus continues to be a central element of her professional journey, underscoring her work and passion for educational equity.
Dr. Rema’s expertise spans multiple areas, including educational leadership, school culture, and organization in underserved and international contexts. She has experience preparing administrators, teachers, and counselors, emphasizing fostering cross-cultural awareness in addressing critical educational issues. Her work involves strengthening the relationships between schools and communities, strongly focusing on parent-school partnerships.
Additionally, she is deeply engaged with the implications of race, gender, and class in schools and how policy and practice can influence student achievement. Rema Vassar has spent significant time studying the issues of equity, justice, access, and inclusion for minoritized communities, mainly through the lenses of critical race theory and leadership.
With over two decades of experience in K-12 public education, Dr. Rema’s roles have included teaching, counseling, and administration. She is dedicated to empowering students and parents, working toward holistic wellness in school communities. She serves on the Michigan State University Board of Trustees and teaches Educational Leadership at Wayne State University.
Rema Vassar firmly believes in the transformative power of education. She has always sought to create authentic and collaborative spaces where people can unite to actualize collective power. Her deep love for communities and the people she serves is evident in her work, both in the classroom and through public speaking. Her teaching and presentations have taken her across the United States and over 20 countries, where she focuses on developing transformative leaders committed to radical hope and love. Her research mainly addresses schools that serve culturally diverse students and families.
Vassar is also a consultant for school districts nationwide, helping educators develop reflexive practices that advance equity and access for all students. Her work has significantly impacted educators, equipping them to take deliberate action and prioritize inclusivity in their classrooms.
In 2021, Dr. Rema founded Centering Black Children in Education (CBCE), a movement focused on student wellness, leadership, and advocacy. The initiative holds an annual free virtual conference that highlights scholarship from thinkers across the globe. CBCE serves as a platform for academic discourse and a gathering place where Black students, parents, educators, and community members unite to celebrate Black children and advocate for systemic change. This space provides a sense of belonging and resistance against the historical and ongoing marginalization of Black children.
Additionally, Vassar established Leading Well, a program dedicated to supporting and empowering Black women in educational leadership. The program provides resources and a community for these leaders to thrive.
Her commitment to advancing education is further demonstrated through her various leadership roles. She was co-chair of the 2024 American Educational Research Association’s annual meeting and was appointed to the governor’s MiSTEM Advisory Council. Vassar has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Crain’s Detroit Business Notable Leaders in Higher Education Award and the National Action Network MLK Dream Keepers Award.
Aligned with her mission, Dr. Rema founded the Sankofa Scholarship Foundation, a nonprofit that provides scholarships to young people in higher education. To support this cause, she organizes a charitable ball that brings together community members, educators, and families. She also serves on the boards of MiLib and Friends of the Children Detroit; organizations committed to breaking the cycle of generational poverty through mentorship and support for children.
A commitment to excellence in both academic and practical realms has marked Dr. Rema’s professional career. She has been a professor of educational leadership and policy studies at Wayne State University for several years. Before this, she held faculty positions at Eastern Michigan University, the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and Azusa Pacific University. Dr. Rema also served as a global instructor for a Master’s program in Organizational Leadership, teaching in Ethiopia, Kenya, Singapore, Haiti, and Ghana.
In her early career, she held various administrative and teaching roles in public schools, including serving as a counselor and community liaison in the Pasadena Unified School District, a school counselor, principal, and parent educator in the Downey Unified School District, and a language arts educator in several school districts.
Vassar’s educational background is equally impressive. She holds a doctorate with honors from UCLA in Urban Schooling and a Master’s degree in School Counseling, graduating magna cum laude. Her dissertation focused on the involvement of Black middle-class parents in public secondary schools. Additionally, she has a Bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in Communication and Secondary Education Curriculum from Western Michigan University, where she graduated cum laude.
As a writer, Dr. Rema has contributed to many peer-reviewed scholarly journals. Her work addresses key topics such as parent-school partnerships, the impact of race, gender, and class in schools, and the role of policy in shaping student outcomes, focusing on ensuring equity for minoritized communities.
Vassar’s journey to higher education was shaped early on by her mother, who instilled a love of learning and the value of education. Her mother’s influence was profound—she read to her every night and ensured that education remained a central part of her upbringing. This early love of reading continued to shape her academic and professional life as she explored literature and found her passion for representation and advocacy in education.
