“WIN Without Competing” with the Right Fit Method is the life mantra of Dr. Arlene Barro, UCLA-Trained behavioral educational psychologist and educator, who holds a master's and Ph.D. with distinction for her doctoral dissertation on creativity in writers. In Dr. Arlene's world "best" does not exist. Her standard is the Right Fit. Make that your standard and change your life. Can you imagine rarely making a wrong decision?
Starting at age five, Dr. Arlene walked with her dad hand in hand through the streets of Brookline, Massachusetts, the birthplace of John F. Kennedy. Her dad, the cantor of a synagogue, seemed to know everyone. He loved having conversations and telling stories. After each conversation he asked her “What did we say?”
He did not want her to recall the words. He expected her to explain “with whom he was dealing” which required understanding the meaning behind the words. He continued to hone this skill. As a result, Dr. Arlene learned how to “see the unseen and hear the unspoken” which enables her to predict, with a small amount of information, outcomes. This critical analytical skill has contributed significantly to her career success and that of her clients.
Her dad taught her how to identify Right Fits. She learned to think in blueprints. Today, she still uses the blueprint of the Right Fit Banana! Using that blueprint prevents the purchase of a rotten banana. We never compared and contrasted anything. By creating a blueprint for the Right Fit, we matched to that blueprint and eliminated Wrong Fits.
Little did he know that he sowed the seeds for the creation of the Right Fit Method. Seeing the unseen, hearing the unspoken is a critical component. Using blueprints is the foundation of the Right Fit Method, to set high standards and WIN Without Competing.
Innovation, contribution, and impact characterize Dr. Arlene’s career. Her passion for the medical field and healthcare was planted at age seven when her mother died of cancer. Later, after finishing her doctorate, the Association of American Medical Colleges hired her to write a monograph on measuring physician performance. The results of her research identified the significant need for physicians to learn how to communicate with patients. She identified a case study in which a physician reported that he told patients to eat more starch. What did they do? They ate laundry starch!
The monograph became a global success. Medicals schools introduced classes to teach communication skills. The National Board of Medical Examiners began changing their testing procedures. Dr. Arlene spoke nationwide about how to measure physician performance.
Moving up! The School of Medicine at the State University of New York at Strong Brook hired Dr. Arlene to establish an Office of Educational Evaluation and subsequently, promoted her to a dean. Her Office set the standard for other offices to spring up in medical schools.
The Dean of Basic Health Sciences at Stony Brook set the stage for Dr. Arlene to join him at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health, when he became the Director of the NCI. Dr. Arlene’s career was moving fast. She quickly became an Associate Division Director and Acting Director at the Director’s request. At the NCI, she oversaw their professional and public education program. She introduced new programs, the first in the nation, on disease prevention, focusing on cancer. Proudly, Dr. Arlene presented the achievements of the education program to the National Cancer Advisory Board, all presidential appointees.
Ben Gurion University in Beersheva, Israel invited Dr. Arlene to serve as a Visiting Associate Professor of Medical Education to do a research study with Hebrew University to evaluate the performance of practicing physicians. After one year in Israel, Dr. Arlene returned to the United States.
On to entrepreneurship! Dr. Arlene founded barroglobal search, inc., a retained executive search firm, to present the One Right Fit Candidate and close the search. Tom Lombardo, the founding editor-in-chief of WebMD, proved the power of the method in the forward to WIN Without Competing!:
“…Dr. Barro walked me through her method, which she had named the Right Fit. We talked at great length and arrived at a blueprint of the Right Fit for different positions that were open. I was looking for doctors, nurses, writers, editors, and, in one case, a division president outside the United States. Over the next two years, I hired forty candidates from Dr. Barro, my exclusive search consultant. She filled the openings on my staff in three countries. The Right Fit Method worked for WebMD’s growth in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Together, we built WebMD to its current status as the Internet’s most visited healthcare site..."
