The State of Social Media in 2018
People are spending more time than ever before on social media – a new survey of social media users found that 86 percent of Americans use social media at least once per day, and 72 percent use it multiple times per day. The Manifest’s survey of 627 social media users finds that many people use several social media channels more often in 2018 than they did in 2017. This includes 63 percent who said they spend more time on YouTube and 61 percent who reported heavier use of Instagram.
Watch out for Facebook Watch
At the end of August Facebook announced it was making its Watch video streaming service available to worldwide audiences. Facebook Watch first launched in the US a year ago and it is the social channel’s move to compete in long-form content with the likes of Google’s YouTube. Despite securing some interesting creators and strong original video content industry reports suggest that it has a way to go yet attracting consistently regular viewers.
Facebook's Messenger and WhatsApp take steps to identify fake news, forwarded messages
Facebook-owned WhatsApp is launching a new feature that will label messages within the app that have been forwarded so users will know they weren’t composed by the sender. In an official blog post, the company says the feature will help make group chats and one-on-one conversations easier for people to follow and allow users to discern the original sender of a message. It will apply to text, videos, audio messages, and images.

The search engine makes it easy for brands to browse web celebrities according to their audience’s demographics and get a view of their past sponsored content to give their marketing strategy a serious edge.
5 predictions in the tech, sports and media industries for 2018
5 predictions in the tech, sports and media industries for 2018 2017 saw online streaming services taking original content to a new level - 2018 is expected to see a drastic jump in spend toward original content. Case and point: Netflix alone is aiming to spend nearly $8 billion in the next year alone, up dramatically from the $2 billion it spent this year. However, what we’re now starting to see - and what we’ll see more of next year - is the return to traditional models.
Facebook Watch is the ultimate test for social TV
The concept of ‘social TV’ first came to widespread prominence in 2010 as people embraced sharing their wild and wonderful opinions about TV experiences on social media. That same year, MIT Technology Review named the phenomenon in its top ten ‘breakthrough technologies’. Fast forward to 2017 and social TV is taking on a much different meaning, especially in light of the marquee launch of Facebook’s new platform for TV shows, Watch.
Everything You Wanted to Know About Social Video But Were Afraid to Ask
Video is well on the way down its path toward total domination of the digital landscape. Cisco estimates that by 2020 a million minutes of video content will cross global IP networks every second. And there’s good reason for the massive increase in video traffic: people like to watch. We’re wired to. We process visuals at a pace 60,000 times faster than we do text. We’re also more likely to remember and even feel emotionally connected with a story we see over one we read.
Twitter scores with NFL deal
With the start of the new NFL season upon us, fans across the U.S. — and indeed across the whole world — are turning their attention to who the winners and losers will be this year, and who’ll be making their way to Super Bowl LI on February 5, 2017 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.
The Rise of Social Video
The last year has seen social video take center-stage, and all signs point to its dominance only continuing to grow. With 8 billion video views daily on Facebook and 10 billion daily video views on Snapchat, video is the core of social content. I define social video as a short-form video content specifically created for driving engagement on social networks. It’s “social” because this type of video is crafted to promote - and is driven by - user engagement, like sharing, commenting, and liking.
With Twitter’s NFL deal, social networks can take on traditional broadcasters at last
For years, the media industry has speculated, somewhat worriedly, that big tech companies wanted to branch out, to take on the TV companies – to acquire rights to premium content. By and large, Silicon Valley firms’ coy response has typically been a demure: “We are a platform company, not a content company.” Now that the dust has settled around the deal it’s clear that Twitter’s landmark acquisition of global NFL broadcast rights finally puts that statement to bed as merely a diversion tactic.
