Dr. Thomas Gratzer’s Biography

Thomas Gratzer, MD, has spent more than three decades building an accomplished career in general and forensic psychiatry. As a board-certified psychiatrist practicing in the Twin Cities region of Minnesota, he has become known for his dedication to patient care, mental health advocacy, and professional excellence. Throughout his career, he has worked with a wide range of individuals with complex psychiatric conditions at respected medical institutions, including Psych Recovery, Regions Hospital, United Hospital, and Fairview University Medical Center. His demanding clinical schedule includes approximately 100 patient visits each week, in addition to conducting multiple forensic psychiatric evaluations. Following his longstanding association with Psych Recovery, he is soon to return to practice there, continuing his commitment to delivering high-quality psychiatric care.

Navigating the Intersection of Psychiatry and Law

A significant portion of Dr. Gratzer’s career has focused on forensic psychiatry, a specialized field that combines mental health expertise with legal evaluation. Between 1995 and 2002, he served as Senior Forensic Psychiatrist at the Minnesota Security Hospital. In this role, he evaluated and treated individuals involved in criminal and civil legal matters, applying his psychiatric knowledge within highly structured forensic environments.

Dr. Gratzer also dedicated many years to correctional psychiatry, serving as a consulting psychiatrist at the Minnesota Department of Corrections Juvenile Detention Center from 1999 through 2015. During this period, he provided psychiatric care to incarcerated youth, many of whom faced severe emotional and behavioral challenges. His work demonstrated the importance of mental health treatment within the juvenile justice system and reflected his belief in rehabilitation and patient support.

Delivering Leadership in Clinical Psychiatry

Beyond forensic psychiatry, Dr. Gratzer has made substantial contributions to hospital-based mental healthcare. From 1995 until 2016, he served as an attending psychiatrist at United Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. There, he cared for patients experiencing serious psychiatric disorders and collaborated with healthcare teams to create effective treatment strategies and crisis interventions.

His leadership qualities were recognized in 1997 when he became medical staff president at the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center. In this role, he participated in institutional decision-making and policy development while supporting efforts to improve patient care standards and medical operations. These responsibilities further strengthened his reputation as both a skilled physician and a respected leader within psychiatric medicine.

Influencing Psychiatry Through Education

Teaching and mentorship have remained important aspects of Dr. Gratzer’s professional journey. From 2002 through 2021, he served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Minnesota Medical School. During this time, he educated medical students and psychiatry residents while sharing insights gained through decades of clinical and forensic experience.

His academic contributions extended to additional institutions, including the University of Manitoba, Rush-Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center, DePaul Law School, and Regions Hospital. These memberships reflect his ongoing commitment to staying informed about evolving psychiatric research, policy discussions, and treatment methods.

His involvement also included service on specialized committees within the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, including the Sex Offender Committee and the Psychopharmacology Committee. Through these roles, he contributed to conversations surrounding psychiatric treatment approaches, forensic standards, and mental health issues affecting the justice system.

Combining Medicine With Technological Innovation

In addition to his medical accomplishments, Dr. Gratzer has demonstrated impressive achievements in computer science and software development. In 1991, he received first prize at the Manitoba Science Fair for a computer program he developed and later participated in Prince Philip’s International Science Fortnight in London, England.

During his college years, he co-authored FAST BASIC: Beyond TRS-80 BASIC, a programming book that sold approximately 10,000 copies. From 1984 through 1990, he also contributed to the development and design of VP-Info, a database programming language for IBM PCs published by Paperback Software International. The program achieved widespread commercial success, selling more than 100,000 copies worldwide. These accomplishments highlight Dr. Gratzer’s ability to excel in both medicine and technology.

Expanding Knowledge Through Research and Publication

Dr. Gratzer has contributed valuable research to forensic psychiatry through numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals. His work has explored topics such as impulse control disorders, compulsive sexual behavior, paraphilia treatment, and the effects of legal frameworks on psychiatric care. His research has helped improve clinical understanding while supporting advancements in forensic psychiatric treatment.

His scholarly achievements have earned several prestigious honors. In 1994, he received the Merrell Dow Psychiatric Research Award and the S. W. Prowse Memorial Award for Clinical Research at the University of Manitoba. He also gained national recognition as a Rappeport Fellow of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. He received an honorable mention from the American Academy of Forensic Sciences for outstanding forensic research.

Embracing Family Life and Personal Interests

Born in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, Dr. Gratzer comes from a family strongly connected to education and healthcare. His father worked as a mathematics professor at Penn State University before relocating to Winnipeg, while his mother practiced dentistry. His brother and sister-in-law both practice medicine in Toronto, Ontario.

Dr. Thomas Gratzer is married to Denise, a marketing professor and agency owner, and his stepdaughter Tanya serves in the Navy’s JAG Corps. Outside of his professional responsibilities, he enjoys tennis, skiing, exercising, traveling, and discovering new culinary experiences. He also remains committed to supporting education through regular contributions to his university foundation, reflecting his lifelong appreciation for learning, service, and community involvement.
