Seven Last Keywords: Vygotsky’s Polytechnism in Russia, China, and Australia

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... Point Lobos parking To clarify a point in the Herald’s story on the problem with parking at Point Lobos, all visitors parking outside the park (whether legally or illegally) and then walking on Highway 1 to get to the park are in danger, The highway simply is not designed to accommodate vehicles parked on a very narrow shoulder along with pedestrians forced to walk IN the road to pass those parked cars and trucks.

MONTEREY – The title of the Panetta Lecture Series’ final event this year is “The Legacy of Free and Fair Elections,” but the discussion June 1 will no doubt cover a whole lot more with possible 2028 presidential candidate Rahm Emanuel and noted political consultant Karl Rove among those on the panel.
Journalist talks modern misinformation at Carmel lecture
CARMEL – "We are at the start of a new era," declared Janine Zacharia to several dozen locals gathered Saturday to hear her speak in Carmel. "It can be quite frightening, but we need to take our anxiety about it and channel it into actions." Zacharia, a Stanford lecturer and 30-year journalism veteran, has seen the industry weather storms before. Yet nothing, she says, compares to the challenges of the current era, which she describes as "the upside-down" of established media norms.
Tom Karwin, On Gardening: Flowers from field to vase Original
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... Editor’s note: This week we reached into the archives for a classic Tom Karwin column which was published in 2012. People, like bees, are attracted to flowers, always for beauty (and occasionally for food). We enjoy flowers in our gardens, but we want them indoors, as well. Americans buy some 10 million cut flowers a day. About 80 percent are grown outside of the United States and brought in by air, in a stunningly efficient transition from field to vase.

Liza Horvath, Senior Advocate: My parents shared their plans
Question: In your last column, you recommended to readers that they share their estate plans with their kids or, at the very least, let them know that the planning has been done. My siblings and I wholeheartedly agree with you! For years we would talk amongst ourselves and speculate whether my mom and dad had any plans in place and, if so, what they were.

Denis Horn Two recent articles in The Herald, both reported by James Herrera, are excellent news for those of us who use the remarkably convenient Monterey Regional Airport. In one, groundbreaking ceremonies were held for an approximately $100 million replacement passenger terminal. The existing terminal building dates back to the 1950s.
‘Cool as Ice’ review by DYLANDOOM • Letterboxd
Cool as Ice ★★★★ Liked The almost angelic calm before the magnificent evening of chaos I had yesterday. I genuinely loved everything about this. The quotables, the shameless music-video montages and dance numbers that look breathtaking mind you, and the very notion that an artist who’s future was all but written like Vanilla Ice still had the juice to get his own Universal motion picture. The 90s ruled.

High rents As I’ve lived in my rented home for 20 years, I had no idea what the cost of rental properties was. Over $1,900 for a 465 square-fott studio. This feels like gouging. Could rent control ever occur in Monterey/Seaside, etc. — Elaine Giampietro, Monterey News coverage I have been a loyal subscriber for 37 years, but please, please try to be more balanced in your news coverage. Too much of the same narrative: Trump “Orange Man” BAD, Tariffs BAD.
Travel: Skiing the Swiss Alps is like traversing the roof of the world
I simply love skiing in Europe’s Alps, and I’ve had my greatest, most memorable winter adventures exploring this lofty, rugged mountain range that spans the heart of Europe. One of my favorite areas, and perhaps the most famous ski destination in the Alps, is Switzerland’s Zermatt. This storybook, car-free village is nestled in a small valley at the base of the Matterhorn, the iconic 14,692-foot, hooked-shaped Alpine crag that looms mystically over a rugged snow-draped landscape.

In defense of public schools The Trump Administration (as part of project 2025) is planning to eliminate the Department of Education. Their argument is that they want to give it back to the states. But public education is already controlled by the states, counties and districts, as is evident by the wide differences in the quality of schools in different areas of the country.

Operation Christmas Cheer: Remembering Edgar Haber and the art of one donation at a time
For years, an anonymous donor contributed large sums of money to Operation Christmas Cheer, the charitable fundraiser run by First Capital Bank, The Herald and the Salvation Army. Voting And here it is, plain and simple, published in the Herald commentary on Friday. Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post, a Harris voter…. “It is unfair that Americans chose someone like Donald Trump over someone like Kamala.“ It is UNFAIR that Americans CHOSE? Isn’t that the very process, choosing? That is one of the cornerstones of the democracy they claim they are so concerned about?
