Introduction The northeastern South China Sea (SCS) is reportedly one of the strongest occurrence sites of internal solitary waves (ISWs) with vertical amplitudes over 200 m (e.g., Ramp et al., 2004; Helfrich and Melville, 2006; Buijsman et al., 2010; Guo and Chen, 2014; Alford et al., 2015). ISWs are generated by the interaction between the strong tidal currents and abrupt topography in the Luzon Strait.
