Guy in Texas and sometimes other places

Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Student reporter at Reporting Texas, an online news publication at the UT journalism school overseen by old pros.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

There's a dilapidated typewriter in the Chronicle lobby and I toy with it sometimes.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

#NotTheOnion -- my story got that hashtag when the Texas governor turned state troops on the feds. It seemed like satire but it was true.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Call 713-362-2152

What's your favorite social network?

I really like Facebook. I follow about 250 news publications, from super mainstream to ultra-fringe, and based across the world.

Why did you become a journalist?

The suburbs were painfully safe, and reporting was the most dangerous job I could think of as a youth. I imagined war zones.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I was a photographer for the high school yearbook. I joined after deciding on journalism. I liked NatGeo style, so I opted for the book.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Work as hard as you can, and accept that you'll be starting from the bottom, like cutting vegetables in a restaurant kitchen. Be patient.
