Gloriously Independent
CT Pastors “Your life and everything in it are unnecessary. You are not necessary.” I sat in my chair with slumped shoulders, stunned. I went to seminary to be encouraged, and these were the first words out of my professor’s mouth. I believe the phrase, What have I done? might have popped into my head. Few thoughts cause us to bristle and react more strongly than this one. Our modern sensibilities are constantly pushing against the idea that we are dependentcreatures.
College Students Feel Shallow. The Church Can Provide Depth
CT Pastors We live in an age of self–indulgence, from self-care routines, to social media algorithms curating our every swipe, to the advertisements that promise our best life is one purchase away. What once defined the college experience—personal autonomy, sex, partying––has lost its allure for many university students today. Researchers report how younger generations take fewer risks and live more isolated lives.
Concerned for Doubting College Students? Invite Them Over.
During the fall of my senior year in college, I stood on the doorstep of a family I didn’t know. My girlfriend (now wife) and I had recently joined their local church and we’d been invited over for dinner. I was in a season of disenchantment with the church, and I showed up at their home with questions about God, the Bible, and the church’s relevance. The culture around me felt like it was shifting, and I was searching for a solid place to stand.
