1 Introduction Urban development is one of the major anthropogenic changes in land surface characteristics worldwide, with substantial impacts on the atmosphere. The most prominent atmospheric phenomenon observed in urban areas is the urban heat island (UHI; e.g., Manley, 1958), which is characterized by higher near-surface air temperatures compared to surrounding rural areas.
