Abstract The genus Platygyra represents an essential group of reef-building corals in marine ecosystems. Here, we present the first high-quality genome assembly of the brain coral Platygyra daedalea, a widespread species known for its ecological resilience across diverse marine environments. Using long-read sequencing combined with chromosomal-level scaffolding based on a genetic linkage map, we assembled an 878.6 Mb genome with a contig N50 of 34.8 Mb (7.C.Q66).
Abstract Standing genetic variation in fitness-related traits is critical to determine how fast populations can adapt to climate warming but is unknown for many species. Here we show that heritable genetic variation in heat tolerance in reef-building coral populations is widespread and strongly associated with selective pressure imposed by marine heatwaves. Our findings suggest that coral populations may be adapting to warming consistent with recent increases in their upper thermal limits.
Sir, the issue of misogyny and workplace sexism is once again in the news with serious allegations coming to light in the UK Parliament. It prompted a group of female friends to reminisce about the everyday, casual sexist remarks that accompanied our dental training in the seventies and eighties where female students were in the minority.
