Introduction Among patients requiring treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU), improved survival is contributing to an increasing burden of functional impairment [1]. In the same period that the adjusted hospital mortality associated with admission to an Australian ICU has more than halved, hospital discharge to a rehabilitation facility (rather than home) has increased over three-fold [1].
