THE DIAGNOSTIC AND PROGNOSTIC ROLE OF CARDIAC BIOMARKERS IN PREDICTING MAJOR ADVERSE CARDIAC EVENTS IN PATIENTS WITH SUSPECTED GENETIC CARDIOMYOPATHIES
Patients with genetic cardiomyopathies experience high morbidity and mortality. These patients require prompt cardiac assessments and early interventions to prevent progression to advanced heart failure. Plasma biomarkers, such as B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), and high-sensitive troponin T (hsTropT) may be able to prognosticate major adverse cardiac events (MACE) in this group of patients.

LOW BODY TEMPERATURE IN HEART FAILURE PATIENTS; PREVALENCE AND OUTCOMES
BACKGROUND Although body temperature is a classic primary vital sign, its value has received little attention compared with the others (blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate). Body temperature has the potential to be an important marker for assessing risk in these complex heart failure patients given that it is simple to measure and widely available. Low body temperature is a neglected vital sign.
TIME TO GUIDELINE-DETERMINED MEDICAL THERAPY IN PATIENTS WITH DE NOVO HEART FAILURE: A RETROSPECTIVE POPULATION-BASED STUDY FROM ALBERTA, CANADA
Quadruple therapy is recommended for the management of patients with heart failure (HF) and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), however, many patients in Canada are not yet on triple therapy. In order to provide background and identify barriers to quadruple therapy, in this study, the aim was to explore the time to initiate triple therapy in a population-based cohort of patients with de novo HF.
ASSOCIATION OF TICAGRELOR WITH RISK OF PNEUMONIA: A POPULATION-BASED COHORT STUDY
Ticagrelor is a potent antiplatelet agent used in the management of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) that exerts several pleiotropic effects, including anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activity. We aimed to compare the risk of community-acquired pneumonia, predominantly caused by the Gram-positive pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae, with ticagrelor versus clopidogrel among ACS patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
THE INCIDENCE RATES OF CARDIAC AMYLOIDOSIS OVER TWO DECADES IN ALBERTA, CANADA
Clinicians have a greater awareness of cardiac amyloidosis with the availability of targeted therapies, however, the patient characteristics and outcomes are not well described in the community. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence rate of cardiac amyloidosis over 2 decades in Alberta, Canada.
THE TRAJECTORY OF FRAILTY SCORES OVER THE COURSE OF CARDIAC REHABILITATION
To view the full text, please login as a subscribed user or purchase a subscription. Click here to view the full text on ScienceDirect. Frailty impacts outcomes of cardiovascular disease. Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) may improve frailty scores. Despite the pervasiveness of elderly patients in CR programs, the prevalence and clinical relevance of frailty in patients undergoing CR remain under-researched.
A comparison of four risk models for the prediction of cardiovascular complications in patients with a history of atrial fibrillation undergoing non‐cardiac surgery - McAlister - - Anaesthesia - Wiley Online Library
Summary It is unclear how best to predict peri‐operative cardiovascular risk in patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing non‐cardiac surgery. This study examined the accuracy of the revised cardiac risk index and three atrial fibrillation thrombo‐embolic risk models for predicting 30‐day cardiovascular events after non‐cardiac surgery in patients with a pre‐operative history of atrial fibrillation.
ASSOCIATION BETWEEN GLYCEMIC CONTROL AND MAJOR ADVERSE CARDIAC EVENTS IN PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES FOLLOWING CORONARY ARTERY BYPASS SURGERY: A SECONDARY ANALYSIS OF THE BARI 2D TRIAL
To view the full text, please login as a subscribed user or purchase a subscription. Click here to view the full text on ScienceDirect. FiguresPatients with diabetes account for one-third of patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), and have a higher long-term risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) after CABG compared to non-diabetics. The reason for this increased risk remains unclear; however, hyperglycemia may be a contributor.
REAL-WORLD USE OF TICAGRELOR DOES NOT REDUCE MAJOR ADVERSE CARDIOVASCULAR EVENTS, BUT INCREASES MAJOR BLEEDING AND HEALTHCARE VISITS FOR DYSPNEA COMPARED TO CLOPIDOGREL: A CANADIAN REGISTRY STUDY
To view the full text, please login as a subscribed user or purchase a subscription. Click here to view the full text on ScienceDirect. FiguresGuidelines recommend ticagrelor over clopidogrel in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) based on the PLATO trial, in which ticagrelor reduced major adverse coronary events (MACE), but increased dyspnea and major bleeding unrelated to coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) compared to clopidogrel.
