American Tune, by BettySoo
I found myself needing solace during the election season this year, and I pulled my guitar out of the "studio" and sat on the couch, playing this song. It struck me that my supporters on Patreon (aka the BS Song Club) might enjoy a studio demo of it, and once I started getting feedback from them, I decided to release it. I haven't officially released any recordings to anyone but the BS Song Club in over six years, so this feels both momentous and anticlimactic, but I decided none of that matters.

Who Was Changed and Who Was Dead, by John Wesley Harding
In 2009, JWH gave us the wonderful Who Was Changed and Who Was Dead. Recorded in Portland OR, he was backed by the classic line-up of The Minus Five, featuring of course Scott McCaughey and Peter Buck, but also Kurt Bloch, Bill Rieflin, and long-time accompanist Robert Lloyd on keyboards. It remains Harding’s favourite of his many records.

Co-Mission: An Artist Relief Compilation, Vol. 3, by Folkadelphia
1. 2. 3. 4. When it's time to learn My star-collecting fern I weave my heart into the sun Why won't I forget Why won't I form anything Then 1) to verify the mind for value Then 2) the hemisphere's delight we make our will I was over you I was over you I was over you I was over you Even if I call another body Riding through the veil with all we fend Even if I make it to the ocean Will I ever dare to love again?
LadyBug, by Joseph Running Crane
Go now Go rest your head Tonight you’re sleeping down among the dead Go now Go off to sleep What I give you by the riverside is yours to keep So slow So slow so loud The light beating down into the ground Ladybug Sweet sleep or a heart attack And where we’re going we ain’t coming back Skyline Skyline at night The world crumbles in the early morning light So sleep now These things won’t bother you There are fewer things that are as true
Company, by Vanderlay
about: ‘Company’ is a song that until recently, I admit I never fully understood. Over the years it’s seen countless rewrites, scrapped choruses, extended bridges, verbose instrumentation and no instrumentation, all in an attempt to make sense of it. The reason for my lack of understanding is, perhaps unsurprisingly, found within the song itself. Company is about losing yourself in the murky space between compatibility and co-dependency and it’s a song that was written from inside that space.

Josephine, by BettySoo
Another night he'll be home late Lipstick smear still on his face And the morning will be hell When she won't want him to tell But when the lights go down on the room And the spot shines on the bright blue plume Tucked in a band around a delicate wrist Floating in the dark ‘til the hand cues the pianist And it's Skylark…Sweet falsetto rings in the air Catch your breath while you stare His face like an angel singing a lover's prayer Every Tuesday after he locks the office doors Pulls the tie...
