Jerry Quarry vs. Bob Foster: Who wins?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by SerbianLoudmouth, . Angry Jerry vs Foster? What is your opinion and who would win if Jerry wanted to revenge his brother after he saw what Foster did to Mike? Foster still wins. Quarry just cuts too easy and Foster is so aggressive. Foster TKO cuts 5. He could stop Quarry on cuts, but no way Quarry is getting KO'd. Richard M Murrieta, Dubblechin and Toney F*** U like this. Quarry doesn't have to be angry to beat Foster.

Greatest heavyweight of all time from each continent
I'd add Bonavena for south America and then agree. To be fair, there isn't really much to debate outside of North America. This might turn into a who's best - Ali or Louis thread.
Boxers who were cheeses
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Saintpat, . We’ve done well with fish, vegetables and fruits. Time to up the ante. I’ll start: Roquefort Marciano Ricotta Graziano Emmental Augustus Romano Gonzalez Ambert Cooper Toma “Hit Man” Hearns Art Aragon Sonoma “Badou” Jack That should get us started. Buddy McGirt Vs Terence Crawford
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by UndergroundBoxing, . Fantasy fight that would have been brilliant stylistically when you look at how they match up. Two strong and skilful fighters with pop in their punch. Crawford has the more versatility and can really dog it out so I’d give him that edge in a close fight. This would be one for the ages though. George Crowcroft, MarkusFlorez99 and elmaldito like this.
Most limited ATG?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by roughdiamond, . What ATGs can you think of that were limited or crude yet still had astounding success? Terry McGovern looks like **** on film, but is obviously one of the greatest fighters ever. Top 20 P4P IMO. Jel and roughdiamond like this. Rocky Marciano comes to mind. He "looks" limited and crude but was still able to find a way to win against the likes of Charles, Walcott, Moore, Louis. Much more skilled than he actually looks on film.

Which boxer was the most subtle in defense?
Eddie Ezzard said: ↑ The owners of two of the most celebrated chins in boxing history belong here, in my opinion. Particularly if we are looking for 'subtle' defence and names that wouldn't crop up with the usual suspects. The Marvelous One: Noted for his thick skull which was likened to a bowling ball, there was more to Hagler seldom being hurt than a Titanium head. He always kept his chin tucked in, his head was always on the move.
Mike Tyson vs Earnie Shavers
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Dance84, . Who wins this match up? Two monster hitters going at it. For sure this one does not go the distance. Will Tyson take Shavers out first? Or while Tyson is engaging Shavers will Shavers land his right and game over for Tyson? "everyone has a plan til they get punched in the mouth " - Mike Tyson Tyson 5'10.
The definitive and contemporaneous account of the Rumble In The Jungle.
In 1974, a matter of hours after Muhammad Ali beat George Foreman in the Rumble in the Jungle, Hugh McIlvanney, who wrote for the Observer for more than 30 years up to 1993, headed to Ali’s villa and was granted an extraordinary two-hour audience with the world champion … We should have known that Muhammad Ali would not settle for any ordinary old resurrection. His had to have an additional flourish. So, having rolled away the rock, he hit George Foreman on the head with it.
Larry Holmes (1978) V Joe Frazier (1971)?
I am really surprised that Joe got an overwhelming vote. This is one of the greatest heavyweight battles of all time. Joe's style makes the difference though, and I go with Joe SD, maybe even a draw, but that is less likely. Personally, I think Holmes would trouble Frazier more than Ali did due to greater power and aggressiveness early on. The fight would probably be even better than Norton vs. Holmes since Frazier didn't do near as much boxing as Norton did.
My EDER JOFRE: Brazil’s First Boxing World Champion is now available globally!!
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by ChrisJS, . Very excited to announce that EDER JOFRE: Brazil's First Boxing World Champion is now available globally. This is a project which was years in the making. Very proud release this book on one of the greatest pound-for-pound boxers of all-time. A boxer so great, he was regarded as the fighter of the decade in the 1960's by The Ring, as well as being the pound for pound best boxer in a golden era for the sport.

AwardedSteak863 said: ↑ BHOP but for a very different reason. He lost his first pro fight after a long prison Stent. The fight took place at 175 and from what I have read, he wasn't in the best of shape. Instead of becoming discouraged and doing something stupid and going back to prison, he dedicated himself to being the best fighter that he could be and dropped down to 160 to become one of the greatest that ever lived. He grinded his way to the title that hard way. Click to expand...
Name HOF fighters that were never hurt/knocked down in their career
Hagler was the first to come to mind. I wouldn’t say Hearns landed his best shot though, because Hagler fought the right game plan and kept close to him. Hearns was most dangerous when he got distance on the right hand. He would get full leverage when he got distance for the right (Cuevas, Duran). Hagler fought like a bull and closed the distance. Not only did this work in not allowing Hearns to get full leverage on the right hand, but Hearns was just plain hard to outbox from the outside anyway.

Humour me. Roberto Duran vs Stanley Ketchel 15 rounds
If boxing truly evolved between the early 1900s and the following decades, you’d be hard pressed to find a better test case than this fight. Yes, Duran could be fat and sloppy and he could be outboxed when he wasn’t on his game (and maybe when he was on his game too, but let’s leave that one aside) but I don’t think Ketchel has the style to trouble Duran in the ways that even a guy like Kirkland Laing did.
Aaron Pryor vs Wilfred Benitez At 140
I picked Benitez because he fought better guys a few times than Pryor, although I think 154 was Benitez best weight. Had he not been beaten by Hearns, I could see him defend the 154 pound title until maybe 1986, but he lost to Tommy and fought a guy who utilizes size in Hamsho at 160. Then his confidence seemed to take a hit. Click to expand... Yeah. Benitez at 154 was all muscle. Pryor would be pudgy at 154. Actually he was kinda pudgy at 140. He could easily fight at 135 or less.
Riddick Bowe vs Tyson Fury
To be honest i think that the wladimir that Fury did beat would beat this evander h2h. But like i said, the only thing that He had on his record is evander ( and he also did beat bowe)
Jose Ribalta vs Jorge Luis Gonzalez
In the pros, it's Ribalta's to lose. Gonzalez was an awful pro. Sloppy technique, poor defence, strong but not particularly powerful and his chin let him down badly once Bowe had cracked it. Ribalta isn't great but he is strong and durable and that really might be enough against the Gonzalez I saw. I see Jose still being there after five or six rounds and Jorge having an empty gas tank.

Otherwise you have Mayweather, Leonard, Canelo, De la Hoya, Duran all in the mix, even though their best work was done elsewhere. For guys whose best work came at 154, I'll go Hearns McCallum Norris Winky Julian Jackson It's obviously a very modern list as the division is relatively modern.

Tommy Morrison Vs Ken Norton??
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Fergy, . Is anyone torn picking a winner here? Or is it clear cut, and Kenny s the all round better fighter? Or does Norton's chin not survive Morrison s best hooks? 10 round s non title fight. 3kd rule in effect. MrPR, Toney F*** U, Pepsi Dioxide and 4 others like this. If it's the Tommy of the Mercer fight who started extremly fast then yeah, i pick the Duke to land his left hook on Ken's middleweight chin.
Julio Cesar Chavez - Ring Interview 'Best I've faced' (March, 17th 2020)
But it was when he stepped up to lightweight that he feels his star grew exponentially. He said his 11th-round knockout of Puerto Rican power-puncher Edwin Rosario for the WBA belt in 1987 was his finest performance.
Evander Holyfield vs Joe Louis
The jab will be the key because Holyfield was always troubled by a jab like most fighters are but he never really countered over it and that is the reason fossils like Foreman and Holmes gave him a hard time........his answer was brawling instead..........he was befuddled by Moorers jab, Lewis's jab and for a time even Mercers jab until as usual Mercer ran out of gas. I take a disciplied Louis by decision due to his jab alone.
Floyd Patterson Appreciation Thread
A genuinely thoughtful man and the epitome of class. Never has a gentler soul held the title. A true role model for children and there fathers even there grandfathers. A grudgeless, egoless loving boy that Floyd. Wish I was more like him.
The chin and defensive skills of Joe Louis
In another thread, Janitor and I got into a huge disagreement over this issue. According to him, it's perfectly reasonable to place Louis chin anywhere from an 8.5-9/10. He says this while simultaneously saying according to his own stats, Chuvalo and McCall are a 10/10. He's essentially saying Louis was only 1 point removed from 2 of the most durable boxers of the past 100 years. I pointed out that something has to give if Louis was floored 10x in at least 6 different fights and was stopped twice.
90 Holyfield vs 71 Ali
Need to change the title. I changed my vote when I read the criteria about the years. In 91, Holy struggled with Bert Cooper. Ali beats that version. But, in 1990, the year of his showing against Douglas which is the Evander we are being asked to consider, he looked at his absolute best. There is a photo of Ali in Feb 1971 where he has a big gut and it's only weeks away from the FotC.
Merry Christmas Classic

What's your favorite quote by a fighter
I always like this one when Hagler was talking about Hearns "He was going to make two million dollars and then he turned down two million dollars,"He started complaining about his little baby pinkie. Do you know how many people would give a million dollars for that little baby pinkie? They'd cut that thing off."

Peak George Foreman V Peak Rocky Marciano
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by ThatOne, . How do you see this battle going? Please discuss. Thank you. Rocky never faced anybody like peak Foreman. I simply don't know how it would turn out and won't pretend to. There is nothing Marciano can do here. It would be like a black bear vs a polar bear. Marciano can't fight backing up, had leaky defense, and would be fighting fire with fire. I see Marciano being launched nearly a foot in the air with the first serious uppercut Foreman lands.

The most "fun" fighters who's names throw around in mythological matchups?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Mike_b, . Imo Ali and Tyson take the cake. Then big George. Ali is the greatest, Mike is the dynamite kid. George is just a big chunk of humanity, a hard puncher and a freak of nature. When you insert George into the equation you usually wonder if he can ktfo of his dream opponent. With Ali and Mike, their names and skills hold godly. Depending which era you grew up in . So with Mike and Ali there is the mystical factor.
Shavers cause of death
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by HOUDINI, . I was texting another via a boxing forum who was good friends with someone who knew Shavers well. He told me Shavers, very quickly and suddenly, came down with Dementia. He died within a year of diagnosis. To be fair, that saved him from a whole world of pain. The obvious analogy is that would be like being one of his first round kayo victims; better to take a big bomb early doors than be broken down over time.

Was Larry Holmes The Last Heavyweight Champ, That Spinks Would Be capable Of Beating?
I'll just go with champs who came along after Tyson had reunified the belts as there were a few champs around just after the time he fought Holmes that he might have beaten. eg Berbick, Witherspoon ca 86, Tubbs. But post-Tyson's reign you can choose from Douglas (though not the legendary Tokyo version) Holyfield, Moorer, 96 Tyson if he can control his fear, Foreman if his knees allow him to move, Seldon, McCall, ... there are loads.
