Towards a Just Coastal Transition: The Mixed Success of Livelihood Diversification and ‘Bouncing Back’ Among Seaweed Farmers in Sorsogon Province, the Philippines
1 Introduction Asian-Pacific countries are currently addressing socio-spatial challenges as they work towards achieving more equitable regional development. While urban core areas in national geo-economies have long reaped the benefits of socioeconomic opportunities through globalisation, semi-peripheries and peripheries find it harder to sustain employment generation (Hill 2002; Ye and Wei 2012; Kanbur et al. 2014).
How uneven development deepens middle-income gap - Edo Andriesse
Edo Andriesse Bouncing back after the COVID-19 pandemic has proven to be more difficult than anticipated. Many countries continue to be trapped in the middle-income category and breaking out remains hard. The domestic — both personal and geographical — dimensions of this trap and how integrated policies could contribute to economic transformation and inclusive development deserve closer attention. Ideally, these efforts could help countries escape the middle-income trap.

Could climate finance help lift fishing communities out of poverty?
Fisherfolk increasingly grapple with the effects of climate change on their homes and livelihoods. Research suggests that channeling climate finance towards poverty-fighting cash transfers could help solve this problem for the approximately 30 million fishers and their families in the Global South. Small-scale fishers often live day-to-day. During our latest round of fieldwork in the Philippines in April this year, my team and I talked to more than 100 fishers in Iloilo Province.
Commentary: If the 21st century is to be Asia’s century, more attention must be paid to rural communities
On the one hand, cities are sites of cosmopolitanism, innovation, splendid architecture, and extreme wealth where billionaires spend their money. On the other hand, many migrants in Asia end up in slums, cannot find a decent job in the formal sector, and find it next to impossible to reach middle-class status. The persistence of slums in middle-income countries such as India, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand threatens Asia’s rise this century.

Inclusive development in the Philippines
Some parts of the Philippines have seen an average rise in incomes fail to affect severe poverty – better opportunities to grow seaweed that can be fixed by policy choices may be the key ingredient for these communities, Edo Andriesse writes. Growing seaweed has become an important source of income in archipelagic Southeast Asia.
[OPINION] Fostering resilient coastal and rural communities in the post-pandemic era
'We know that a stock market collapse will affect the real economy again and that a super typhoon will again hit the Philippines; we just don’t know exactly when' It is heartwarming to see that people in Siargao have supported each other and have set up community kitchens, as reported in Rappler’s recent article “Community kitchens help Siargao folk to get through Odette crisis.” It demonstrates that civil society can do much good in times of upheaval and heightened uncertainty.
Building resilient coastal communities in the Asia Pacific | East Asia Forum
25 November 2020 Author: Edo Andriesse, SNU and Kristian Saguin, UP Diliman The Asia Pacific has seen an impressive reduction in absolute poverty within the span of a few decades, but marginal groups in the region still remain vulnerable to the multi-scalar shocks of economic fluctuations, natural hazards and health crises.
