1 Introduction Symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) is a by-product of intranuclear arginine methylation in all nucleated cells, specifically by Type II protein arginine methyltransferase (PRMT) enzymes [1], and is released during proteolysis. It is primarily excreted by renal filtration [2] and serum SDMA concentrations are less influenced by changes in muscle mass than are serum creatinine concentrations [3].
1 INTRODUCTION Canine mast cell tumours (MCTs) are the most common integumentary malignancy in dogs, accounting for 16%–21% of all skin tumours (Bostock, 1986). They have a variable biological behaviour, ranging from nondisseminating solitary masses to widespread metastasis and, occasionally, systemic disease (Garrett, 2014, Kiupel & Camus, 2019).
