What was your first job as a journalist?
I volunteered for a community website. Eventually got a paid position.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, when I was a kid. Not for a long time, though.
How is social media changing news?
I think it's making news more organic. Things that many people experience tend to catch on and get recognized.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
She's real: Martha Gellhorn.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It means to ask questions and write.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
This is a bit older, but #SochiProblems was pretty funny.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I love a brisk, informative press release.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
My eight year old Mac. Let's hope it holds on a little longer!
What's your favorite social network?
Instagram.
Who do you wish followed you?
I honestly can't think of anyone.
Why did you become a journalist?
I like to write.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Recently I wrote an article about Native American Attorneys and their experiences in the legal profession. It was eye-opening.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Leave your ego at the door and don't be afraid to ask hard questions.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Right after lunch.
