Who are your best Southpaw Counterpunchers?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Seamus, . If you were to coach a southpaw, who would you pick out for him to study for solid counterpunching basics from the southpaw stance? Recent guys. Whitaker, Martinez, JCG, Nunn, Moreno, Payakaroon, Nazarov, Sanders, Byrd, Bute, Chagaev. Some of them are more aggressive like Nazarov, Sanders, Bute and aren't always doing it off the back foot like Nunn but they're very good counter punchers too.
Langford - Jeannette - Full Clip-Real Speed
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by he grant, . That's fine work, HE. I'll watch it a bit later and give my thoughts. This is no doubt a very important find for the evaluation of early 1900's boxers. The quality is great for the age and it displays two of the more highly regarded boxers of the era. I'm truly glad for you guys to see it ... to me this is a huge find, a real golden nugget ! Not sold on the decision in favor of Langford, at least according to the footage seen here.
Top 10 Fights Competed at the Highest Level
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by sweet_scientist, . Of all the fights we have complete on film, which have shown the combatants at the combined highest level of ability? Here's my list: 1. Roberto Duran vs. Ray Leonard I 2. Joe Frazier vs. Muhammad Ali I 3. Kid Gavilan vs. Billy Graham III 4. Fighting Harada vs. Eder Jofre II 5. Ray Leonard vs. Tommy Hearns I 6. Donald Curry vs. Marlon Starling II 7. Tony Canzoneri vs. Kid Chocolate 8. Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Meldrick Taylor 9. Carmen Basilio vs.
Bob Fitzsimmons vs Larry Holmes
The closest Fitz fought to Holmes was Corbett. The results were mixed. Fitz wore him out eventually and kod him. But Corbett did have Fitz in a lot of trouble. I get the feeling that Homes was a little bigger and hit even harder than Corbett, with little speed difference. Holmes was perhaps a tad more one dimensional with his left, but this is more than offset by a much higher workrate with that left Jab.
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by KOTF, . Both had unbelievable hand-speed, but who was faster? Handspeed -Taylor ....Footwork-Camacho Camacho, no doubt about it, in my opinion. Much faster on his feet in terms of opening and closing the distance, and just as fast with his hands, although he used to actually put more body into his shots, so maybe he wouldn't flick off the kind of 8-punch shoe-shine flurries that Taylor did. Flip a coin;both had blinding speed.
what if meldrick taylor...
Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by killuminix, . would have immediately re matched chavez after the 1st fight how would you see taylor doing in the rematch The damage was done. Chavez by ko 5 Kush said: ↑ The damage was done. Chavez by ko 5 Click to expand... This. I think Chavez would have won by TKO late on, probably somewhere in the rounds 8-10 bracket.
Simultaneously great offensive and defensive fighters.
Some of my picks: A young Wilfredo Gomez (up to the Zarate fight): One of the very best I've ever seen at blending brilliant upper-body movement, footwork, angles, and pin point punch picking. Just a beautiful all-arounder to watch in his younger days. John Conteh: See above, although Conteh's head movement in particular was superior, his anticipation of blows. He obviously didn't have Gomez's footwork, though, although his balance was impeccable.
Kid Azteca
Hello! Kid Azteca boxed from 1929 to 1961 that is almost 32 years, he did some fights in featherweight, but he fought from lightweight to middleweight. But most of his fights were at welterweight. He started boxing almost at the age of 12 or 13, that also makes him one of the youngest boxers to make his debut along with Arizmendi who is said to have started at 10, and Nipper Pat Daly, who is also said to have started at 10.
Prime Sugar Shane Mosley vs Floyd Mayweather Jr @ 135
Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by IppoMakunouchi, . Hard fight to pick.... Shane was the best light weight since Roberto Duran IMO Prime Shane Mosley was during his initial fights as a welterweight. Thought he looked better than ever against De La Hoya in their first fight. As for the question: Money in 12. 8-4, 7-5ish type of decision. Seckah said: ↑ Hard fight to pick.... Shane was the best light weight since Roberto Duran IMO Click to expand... Better than Pernell?
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EDKsWOKIlo[/ame] This fella. Maybe not groundbreaking on first glance, yet unlike any other fighter I can remember watching. Left hand sort of tilted somewhere between the traditional position and a defensive cradle. Perfect for snapping out the jab, whipping in the leading hook to the body and creating a defensive forcefield down the left side of his body. Right arm parallel to the ribs with the glove hovering in and around his chin.
TBomb 25 said: ↑ Hearns would crack Saad his defense is way to leaky...even worst than Andries...and he could'nt box as good as Dennis who showed a decent jab against Hearns.. Click to expand... Saad (as Matt Franklin) was an above average boxer before he decided to become a brawler. But, Saad wouldn't try to outbox a master boxer like Hearns.
PBF vs. Napoles, Basilio, Hearns, Duran, Tito, Leonard, Robinson
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by KOTF, . Graham Houston strikes again. http://espn.go.com/sports/boxing/blog/_/name/boxing/id/5156696/mayweather-versus-boxing-greats After Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s masterful performance against Shane Mosley, it is easier to accept his bold pronouncements of greatness. He could probably have held his own with the best in any era.

Soriano had a less than stellar record going into this fight, but the commentary should put the level of respect with which he was regarded firmly into perspective. An 80 fight veteran he could "beat any welterweight in the world" on his night, but was seemingly inconsistent.

Fighting Harada vs. Midget Wolgast
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by dpw417, . Bantam or Fly. 15 rounds. Harada has to be hell for any defensive wizard. His fast, repeated jabs would off set the rhythm of most, if not all, counterpunchers. And his relentless aggression and fast combinations would be enough to break through a defence. Saying that Wolgast was about angles and would try to keep Harada off balance but I can't see him doing it for prolonged, enough, periods to really gain command.
Eusebio Pedroza vs Vicente Saldivar
Fantasy fights are something that I don't really bother with anymore but believe it or not Vic, I was wondering about this one just the other day. It probably would've been something of a barnburner and a superb clash of styles with the added potential of being one of the greatest of all featherweight stand-offs. The more I think about it, however, the more inclined I am to take Saldivar of the Laguna/Ramos/Robertson/Winstone fights over Pedroza of the Ford/LaPorte fights.
Sugar Ray Robinson fights Billy Graham
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by bman100, . Came across a story whilst looking in an old thread on here, it goes that Sugar Ray had a fight in the street with Billy Graham (the same Graham who had a rivarly with Kid Gavilan), anyone know anything about this story, ive never heard it before and wonderd if anyone knows anythong about it, lke why they were fighting, and more importantly who won this fight , sorry but i gotta know.
George Foreman vs Jack Johnson, How competitive would it be?
Very true Janitor lol. How do you see this fight going? I have mixed views myself.. On one hand i can seen foreman just overwhelming Johnson with his combos and agression. On the other hand... I see Johnson seeing everything big george throws and easily dodging and countering with shots of his own. IMO it's safe to say.. Johnson wouldn't be pulling any punches in this fight
Dirty Fighting 101: Low Blows, Headbutts, Late Hits, Elbows, Etc..
Unforgiven said: ↑ Yeah, him and Lennox Lewis were the same in that regard. Maybe a blessing that they never fought each other. Lewis still whines to this day that Holyfield butted him. I guess being so tall Lewis never got to fully develop that skill. He had little trouble stooping down to hit his man on the floor though, so who knows. Bruno develop into a fairly foul fighter too. Rabbit punching and holding-and-hitting made up the best part of his repertoire in later years. Click to expand...

educate me on Khaosai Galaxy
Starting off Khaosai Galaxy isn't his real name, very cool name, but not his legal name. His last name "Galaxy" was a building that was owned by his manager. It is frequent that fighters on that side of the world they take the name of the gym their fighting in. Like "Kratingdaenggym" or "3K Battery" or what have you. Anyway, when you talk about his fighting style he was very aggressive and used his strength to win his fights. He was a very very strong fighter.

Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Edwin Rosario at LW
Boxing News 24 Forum Forums > Boxing > World Boxing Forum > Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by KOTF, Oct 31, 2011. SJS19 Obsessed with Boxing Rosario. Marquez was great at lower weights. He's not really a Lightweight, he looks very small compared to guys like Katsidis and Diaz. He's having rough patches fighting these guys, he's able to dominate Lightweight because there hasn't been another world class fighter in the weightclass.
Your favorite displays of counterpunching?
Gotta love Benitez, and Starling. Watching Mayweather-Judah right now for the first time in like 4 years. Definitely an underrated technical fight. Too bad Judah is a basket case. Lol I'm a fan of Benitez and love watching Starling when he's on point. Mayweather-Judah was a great fight to watch.
