Phages reconstitute NAD+ to counter bacterial immunity
Abstract Bacteria defend against phage infection via a variety of antiphage defense systems. Many defense systems were recently shown to deplete cellular nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) in response to infection, by breaking NAD+ to ADP-ribose (ADPR) and nicotinamide. It was demonstrated that NAD+ depletion during infection deprives the phage from this essential molecule and impedes phage replication.
Let`s not be naive - lobbying is part of our world, but that number is staggering! (via Passle)
There is a very German phrase called “Realpolitik” which means political realism. It fundamentally describes the fact that political decisions - and all other decisions in life for that matter - always need to be seen in the context of the real world and facts rather than being based on ideals and wishful thinking only, whether we like it or not. The same holds for our journey into a sustainable future. However, sometimes “Realpolitik" facts still knock me off my socks and scare me.
How to determine the right funding mix for your business (via Passle)
It may seem an odd time to ask that question. VC funding is hard to come by at present, deals harder to close, valuations lower, and plenty of down-rounds being done. It can feel a little like ‘just take what you can get’. But I disagree. (I'm on my third start-up, so have had these challenges). CFOs play a crucial role in preparing start-ups for their next funding round, especially as the strategic focus shifts from "growth at all costs" to finding a sustainable path to profitability. Traditionally, start-ups have been laser-focused on rapid growth, often sacrificing profitability in the process.
Why Women Fall Short In Negotiations (via Passle)
I came across this interesting Forbes article that sheds light on why women often fall short in negotiations (It's Not Lack of Skill!). As I always wonder why most of the woman negotiate differently from man, this was an interesting read. According to the article, there are two main explanations. First, the "tameness narrative" suggests that women may be less likely to speak up and ask for what they want in negotiations.
The Power of Dialogue in the Interviewing Process (via Passle)
In today's competitive job market, finding the perfect candidate can be a challenging task. Often, a candidate's resume may seem impressive on paper, but when it comes to the actual interview, things can take an unexpected turn. Recently, I had an experience that reinforced the importance of effective dialogue during the interviewing process. I interviewed a candidate who, on paper, had all the qualifications and experiences we were looking for.
